if the filter is mounted outside the engine compartment
and the pipe is inside you would still be cooling off the pipe
from the filter being outside

this is one reason i prefer ram air

A test I did a long time ago on a Hemi 5.7L Jeep with a cold air metal intake. Everyone on the Jeep forum was spreading the whole "Hot Air Intake," so I had to see for myself.

the big debate now is about hot the metal pipes get hotter than the plastic, heating the air.
I believe I mentioned this before, but the air traveling in your inlet pipe is moving too fast to heat up to a point where it will affect anything negatively. So it doesn't matter if the inlet tube is made of plastic or metal.
