Hey guys, my motor is going in the car next week, but with all these coil packs/spark plug wires running all over the motor its very convincing to convert to COP. There is a guy on corral who sells the harness needed and he has COP's for a good price. Just wanted to check, has anybody tried this conversion with higher hp motors? nothing at all is wrong with my coil pack/wire setup, its just a mess and looks soooo much cleaner with COP. Just wanted to see if this conversion could cause any sort of problem on higher hp motors or anything I should watch out for?? Thanks

Mike

I dont think its as reliable, nor as long lasting, and definaly not as cheap. My opinion on this topic is widly known in any cop thread. I wouldnt run them.

as said, in "theory" nothing should change....

its just so tempting when looking at how no coil packs/wires looks, and it really isnt that expensive, when I was originally parting out the harness/COP's I was getting prices in the $400's for everything. This guy on corral sells a harness/COP's for $200 to your door

If you do the coil over pack conversion you are gonna be left with weird brackets that hold the coil packs on the front of the motor left behind.

The proper way to do it is to change the timing cover to the 99-04 version. I Just happen to have a 99-04 timing cover for sale with all the pullies and tensioner if you are interested.

eh, if thats the case I JUST finished completing my whole 8 rib conversion, so I'll just leave everything alone, it would be a pita to take the blower/pulleys back off. thanks for the offer though handz

I did coil over plugs when I put my 04 motor in. Save's money on buying wires, cleaned up the engine bay. I am running close to 300whp N/A and 400+ with the nitrous. I don't think there will be a problem as long as you do a good clean sealed job. I also took off the passenger side coil pack bracket and shaved the down on the drivers side to look good and support the resevoir.

when I asked the guy selling the product if it would support in my range of power he said "I cant guarantee that, he has a few guys making good hp with them but will not guarantee it will work as good as stock wires/packs"

Enough said for me....no thank you

I'm doing a T/F overhaul on a 2V and cop would be cleaner and easier. I still have to believe racers that have put them to the test. I'll stick with my coils and wires for now.

yeah I have spoken w/ 2 guys that did the COP conversion on 600hp builds and the one guy said he was having dyno problems in upper rpms and he truly thought it was because of the conversion and the other guy said it wasnt worth it. I decided to hold off

Are the guys with COPS from the factory having issues with ignition in 600+ HP cars or is it just a swapped into non COP cars that might have issues?

^ That might be the difference with me and any other PI motor swapped member. Would COP's on a NPI create those problems opposed to a PI motor with factory COP's?

I looked into this when building my car, in thoery it seems better because a coil is firing for each cylinder, vs 1 coil firing for 4 plugs per 2 revolutions. however I wasn't able to find any reliable feedback and it was kinda spendy.
you might want to stick with your packs and could look into swapping it afterwards IF you're loosing amperage/spark.

terminator cobra's and the the gt500 shelby's use cop's so how do they avoid the issues? i am doing the eaton/C head top end swap and was looking into the cop conversion. could i still use the 03 04 valve covers and cop covers and relocated the coil packs behind the motor and still use the cop covers to hide the wires???? i just want to clean it up but don't want to sacrifice performance.

You will find tons of guys with 300-400hp builds not having any problems...I have yet to find more than 3 guys on over 5 forums that run this conversion successfully in the 500-600rwhp range and will have positive things to say...

These super awesome gt500 and termi guys use cops but what do the FASTEST cars in the world use? What does John Force and Larry Dixon use? Plugs and Wires.... What is easy to repalce, repair and diagnose, wires. Its my own opinion but personally I dont see ANY gain in cops over coil packs. I will never use an aftermarket coil pack, oe stuff works great and much more reliable.

if i use 03 04 valve covers and these spark plug covers:
GT500polishedunitsb8-6-09016.jpg

can i relocate the coil back to the back side of the engine and run the wires under and out the back side of the cop cover just so i won't see them?

the only reason i was going to do the cop conversion is so i can use those gt500 cop covers with chromed 03 04 valve covers. . . i'm picky

if my question does not make sense let me know
