it amazes me all the things that they are faking now. Last week I needed to get a memory chip and looked online to see that there was a HUGE difference in price on what looked to be the same product. I did a check to see if fake chips were real and I guess I was surprised as I worked in the semiconductor industry for 9 yrs so I know all the $$$ that goes into a single chip its amazing to me that somewhere there is a set up like I worked in cranking out fake chips.

Now fake autoparts....

Anyone got something that they thought was real and discovered it was fake?

Bought a like-new Shure SM57 microphone off eBay (music is my other passion). Compared it to ones I bought new locally I knew were authentic, and the eBay one looked hinky. I did my research. It was a Chinese copy. I sent the seller a note with a link on how to tell the fake ones and asked for my money back. I got it.

I use to sell sunglasses while on break from college back in the 90s. Back then the Oakley fakes were just starting to come out but were really easy to spot even if you didn't sell them. I am sure the lenses are not on par by any means and you can probably tell by the clarity just putting them on. Short of a bad lens though it can be hard to tell. I was also surprised all the beats headphones, phones, hell anything now...

yea I saw that and they were close enough to fool you other then the mag input and that adjustment. It makes me wonder though how long msd has been knocked off and if the reputation they have slipped from in the past 5-10 yrs is because of it. But if they can knock of a micro chip big embossed letters in an aluminum casting is nothing..... Who was it recently that showed that mishimoto knocked off some parts but said they never did patent it because of the expense? In this modern day of reverse engineering anything now while a patent might cost too much and seem like not enough, its all you have....

The problem is the counterfeiters dont care about patents and some country's (china) dont acknowledge patent laws. So while you can patent everything to death, unless you have Very deep pockets to take a company outside of the US to court over patent infringement, your basically screwed.

This reminds me of the meme with Jeremy Clarkson where he's in China with fake Starbucks, cloths phones and everything lol

very true and yet with out it you should just mail china a sample and the computer files so that its just that much easier. They busted 6 companies at sema for it and they are prosecuting them for it. What will happen remains to be seen but putting a product out that is not protected is just like walking into a robbery unprotected. I don't care if I only have 2 shot dillinger pistol no matter how small it is you want something more then your words in both situations to back you up.

I've purchased DVD box sets of television shows from eBay before and could tell they were knock offs. Once I started playing them, the quality was shit, and upon further examination, the DVDs were Region 0 or Region 9 encoded (vs being Region 1 like they're supposed to be for US and Canada) and they were not dual layer DVDs, as all commercially produced DVDs should be. Knock off DVDs are all over eBay, especially for popular shows like: Walking Dead, Sons of Anarchy, etc. But movies are also commonly knocked off, especially Disney films and others.

Everyday people buy these for a fraction of what the stores, like Best Buy, are charging and they don't know any different. Meanwhile these con-artists unload tons of bootlegs on eBay before enough people like me catch on, report them, and leave bad feedback. They finally get their accounts suspended, but then they just make new accounts and start all over.

I recommend using a software called Nero Info Tool (Download) to check discs that you purchase online for the correct encoding and whether they're single or dual layer... I found that about one out of every 10 to 15 discs that I've purchased ended up being fake... no exaggeration. I've even bought DVDs from thrift stores that ended up being fake.

^proof or ban hammer...

Yeah, fakes of everything now.
I like amazon over ebay, easier to filter out junk and shipping is fantastic in Canada.

Its a shame.... I was nervous when buying my walbro 255 for all the fakes that are out there. I also saw a scam where people were selling aem widebands for like 115 shipped. I heard 2 different stories weather they were legit or not.

I worked in China for years and the stories I could tell.... Original OEM boxes are worth their weight in gold, for copying and resale by sticking a piece of junk in an orginal box. I have been fooled and was forced to source all cutting tools from the USA, knock offs from Japan and Germany abound. Don't get me started on car parts, there is a tuner shop on every corner and they are hip to the ricer toys and they have money, they love quality and hunt hard to get the real stuff.
Do a search here for my rant on fake Cobra brake calipers and the headaches with them..

Bought what was supposed to be a Shure SM57 microphone off eBay. It looked different, so I compared to the ones I had and checked on line how to spot a Chinese counterfeit. Yep, it was bogus. Lucky for me the seller refunded my money and shipping costs.
