Distributor Problem

To start things off, I'm replacing my intake and roller rockers, so we removed the distributor cap and inside the cap all the brass terminals was wore down severly. Also noticed the rotor's tip burned away, about 1/4 of an inch burned off. We removed the distributor to find that the shaft was not spinning freely. In fact, the shaft had to be forced to be turned. We took the distributor apart to find the internal shaft had no lubrication. This is an original distributor and a fairly new rotor and cap. Now this hasn't stop my motor from performing well, what I mean is no idle problems or miss firing at all. This was an accidental find. I was wandering if anyone else has had this problem?

I was having idling, and high rpm problems with mine a few months ago. I pulled it out to find the shaft wiggled like a loose tooth. The gear was also very worn, and the cap (MSD) was a little worn, but my rotor was ok.

I ended up buying a used dizzy from a 95 Cobra with only 45k miles ($40 shipped), and a MSD cap/rotor ($25) and my problem was fixed. I suggest just buying a nice, low mileage one, worked out great for me.

I just ordered a MSD probillet distributor. Should be in tomorrow. I was just curios if anyone else has had this problem. I had been meaning to replace the stock distributor a couple of months ago, but I wasn't having any problems, so I thought. Anyway, I think its one of those parts that doesn't get attention unless you have a problem with it.

I'm running the msd 6a box and if it weren't for the box, I don't think it would have started. The spark had to jumb more than a 1/4 of a inch to reach the brass terminals in the distributor cap. I really impressed with the amount of spark the msd box was throwing out, I even ran at the track two weeks ago with a nitrous pass, and was only off my best time by a .10. I contributed this to the 15mph head wind, but now I think it was ignition related. We'll see in about another two weeks, I'll be back at the track with some new times. I was wandering how long do you think it took to wear these parts out? My rebuild has only 4000 miles on it. Thanks for the link...

no prob. I'm not sure about the answer to your question though, my dizzy had 100k+ miles on it, so it was just plain worn out.

I have never had problems with msd stuff. i'll be installing my 6al this week too

i do plan to run it soon, but i'm scared to blow the tranny. In about 2-3 weeks i may take it down the 1/8th mile near my house, but it wont be an all-out race.

Aw c'mon - just beat the crap out of it. Mustangs don't feel loved unless you abuse them a little. Ask my poor daily driver. :uglystupid2: :)
