In the past, my car has run out of gas around the 1/8 tank mark on the fuel gauge. Since then I've just made it a habit of filling up when the gauge dips below 1/4 just to be on the safe side. Before I dropped the tank to install the fuel pump, the gauge was reading around 1/8, maybe a lil lower, and I'm surprised to see there's hardly any fuel in the tank, maybe 1/2-1 gallon (kinda hard to guess). That seems like a lot less than what should show at 1/8 tank. Since the tank is down anyway, should I replace the fuel level sending unit and would it maybe fix my problem? They're $80 at 50resto. Thanks guys.

It sounds like the sending unit is going south. It's rare for the actual gauge to malfunction but it has happened.

Mines done that before where its been running out of gas but the gauge showed it should have had enough left in it. Luckily I was at a gas station at the time.

Yeah i noticed mine doing that lately and the only reason i know i am almost empty is the amount it takes to fill it up even though the gauge says otherwise. When i get a chance to drop it again i'll replace it but i just know that since i have only a small trip to and from work i only get about 12-14 mpg so i just gauge it off that.
