I've always been a long time reader here but this is my first post.
I recently sold my 69 mustang project car in order to buy a daily driver and I want to buy an sn95 the 1994-95 preferably because it has a 302 and I am more familiar with it.

Almost right after I sold my car the 95 gt that I've seen down the street was put up on craigslist. Heres the link to the ad http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sby/cto/1571405834.html . So I went to go look at the car he turned it on and it sounded good and everything. The inside was in great shape and the interior and outside was clean and so was the engine bay with no leaks or anything. One of the good things I thought about the car was that it was the original engine and only had 102,000 miles on it. I did not get to test drive it however because I had to leave to do other things.

The only real concerns I have about the car is the fact that according to him it can only use premium fuel and won't run as good on 87 and the fact that it won't pass smog and considering that I live in CA it might be a big issue to get it too pass. I was wondering is that really true about using 91 octane because I would assume it would run fine on regular and how hard it would it be to get it to pass smog? He said it only needed cats to pass and I considering I have never really worked on any new cars before how hard would it be to put those in?
Thanks

the only reason that that car should need premium is if he has messed with the timing.. and all it needs is Catalytic converters in order to pass smog.. i believe.. california might require more. cats are fairly cheap.. i do run premium in my car just cuz i have noticed better throttle response and a little more fuel mileage.. but yea.. shouldnt have to have it. pretty good lookin car though!

Having to run premium probably means he bumped up the timing. That can be a good thing, little bit more umph to it but if you want to run regular fuel, you can always time it back down.

If missing cats are the only problem, all you really have to do it replace the H-Pipe or X-pipe or wahtever pipe is on it with ones that have cats. Guys like you that are in CA tend to have two, that way they can swap the more free-flwoing exhaust back on after inspections.

Good luck!

To answer your question about the midpipe swap, a 95 gt might be one of the easiest cars to do exhaust work on. A few sockets and a jack and jack stands and you could have it done in an hour (if your bolts arent rusted stuck like mine were). Also dont forget to change those O2 sensors because you wont pass emmisions if those are bad as well.

How can the interior be a 9/10 with a 2 inch cut in the drivers seat. 99.9% of the people who say they change there oil every 2k miles are lying.

Actually the interior is spotless. The 2 inch tear looked to be from just normal driver seat wear.

So I got the car :headbang: Now the only thing I'm worried about is getting pulled over for the loud exhaust and having no cats. Does anybody no what the penalty for that in CA is? and does anyone know where I can find some exhaust systems that have cats and would pass smog in CA?
Thanks

I just wanted to say I was changing my oil around every 1500mi-2000mi simply because I didn't have an odometer and changed it before big trips to be safe... with Royal Purple too. haha

Running a Catted H or X with high flows cats will hardly be worth switching to a O/R pipe. You would only be doing it for sound.

Look up on google the laws on the sound. Here in VA you don't have to actually have mufflers as long as the pipes exit the side or back of the vehicle.

Ok so I looked under the car and it is straight pipes with no mufflers and magnaflow tips. Anybody have any suggestions for mufflers? I want loud, but not crappy sounding loud. Something with a nice sounding tone at all times if that makes sense. and how much would a shop charge to install these mufflers considering that right now I have straight pipe all the way through?
Thanks (I will post up pics of the car when it gets sunny up here)

When you say straight pipes do you mean just no mufflers or no mid section on a midpipe straight pipe?? You could take my old Dynomax Ultraflo SS with a O/R pipe and be very happy with it. Usually a shop will charge anywhere from 65-100 to weld in mufflers.
