Fixed my stupid rattling shifter

For some reason, the bolts holding my shifter handle on kept coming loose, despite liberal amounts of red loc-tite. This would cause the thing to rattle around when I was driving, and generally annoy the shit out of me.

So after a quick trip to the hardware store, I bought:
(2) M8 x 1.25 x 40mm button head bolts
(2) M8 x 1.25 nylock nuts

...for about three bucks.

Then I went home, took my old shifter bezel out, and installed the new stuff. Again, liberal amounts of red loc-tite were used, and I cranked down the nylock nuts pretty tight too. Oh, and I installed a new and improved shifter boot/bezel that I bought from a guy on the forum. It looks much better now and the rattle is gone.

Before: :(

That's probably enough car repair for me for today. I'm feeling quite lazy.

What you're describing is exactly what mine did. I got sick of driving around holding on to it all the time.

lol mine did the same.... but mine must have backed out quick because it all happenend or at least i only noticed it in one day.

i was making about an hour drive and it started ratting really bad.. so im like ok wth? so i keep driving hoping it would stop and it never did. well like 45 minutes into my drive, i go to shift (traffic) and my handle like bends a few degrees, im like ok WTF a bolt had to back out or something... so on my drive on the highway, my friend takes my boot off and one of the nuts had fallen off lol.

so we stopped and got a new nut and thread locker and haven't had problems since.

glad you fixed it though, if one decides to back out on me again, ill look at this thread. i may go check it here in a bit because it feels kinda mushy now that i think about it. might just be playing games in my head now though.

The boot is attached to the bezel. The bezel just pops out when you pull up on it.

yeah i noticed it doing it the day after i got the short throw in and everything put back together... the day i put it in i had the insulator boot out so i just had a gaping hole in the floor letting all that wind and engine noise in while i test drove..

im just not sure if with mine its where the handle connects to the shifter or if its where the shifters mounted to the tranny yet...

edit: didnt realise i replied inside the quote tags...

How did you get the leather shift boot to stay tucked underneath? I'm thinking ima have to buy a whole new shifter boot, because mine is so messed up... is there anyway to stick it back under there and it stay?

It is supposed to be firmly attached to the shifter bezel, and should stay there on it's own. Mine was beat up and no longer attached, so I bought a good one from a guy on this forum.
