well my gas and water gauges died on me so i replaced the whole cluster with what was supposed to be a newer all working cluster, and still both gauges do not work. iam curious as to if there is anything else that would cause both of those gauges to quit other than just a bad cluster? and im not sure if this is the right section, but any an all help is needed lol

Fuel could be a bad float on the sending unit. The temp could be a bad sensor. All of the gauges except for the fuel is just a "switch" or a dummy gauge. as long as they are reading something you are o.k. I would also check for a break in the wires from each of the two sources that I mentioned.

ok thanks man, i had read that gauges going out was a common problem with the 96. ill double check the wires, but i have already replaced the coolant temp. honetly just getting sick of fooling with it.

Ok well i noticed this on the way home, that my gas gauge needle moves around. Does that mean the float is bad?

It wouldn't be a temp sensor. If it was bad you car would run horrible. See if they share anything in common maybe fuses or double check things

Mine does that too slightly. It also goes down very fast. Either my gauge is having problems or I have the MPG of a V10 Super Duty.

I noticed when I pulled my cluster out (RPM gauge worked when it wanted to and when it did, it was very inaccurate), there is a lot of grounds in both plugs. When I installed the aftermarket tach, the rpm gauge works perfect now. So I'm thinking it was a possible ground issue since my tach is grounded elsewhere. Everything inside of the cluster itself looked great. If you have access to a volt meter/ammeter, you could test the wire for both gauges to see if they're getting a good connection or not. Here's a diagram of both plugs to see if they help at all. Both gauges are pretty important, so it sucks if they're not working.
