Going from one amp to two

My dad owned Classic Car Audio In Chico Ca for 30 years and my Uncle owns Jerrys Auto Stereo in Yuba City CA
and my other uncle is the rep for JL Audio , Hertz and other great companys..

The problem with car audio is there is no money in it anymore but I will always love it..

Cool. The crossovers are going in the trunk under the box. I'll post some pictures after its all done or once I start wiring at least. I came up with an idea, and my friend measured it all out, he already has the box almost done! I have to run some different wiring for the additional amp, I Just havent had time yet. I'm going to be using the stock Mach tweeters, the ones in the component kit are too small.

I use that exact one...only running one amp, but mine is on top of the mount I built in my trunk.

swapping speakers in a componant kit is not advised. every speaker is different and that speaker will effect the cross over differently and make it play different and not optimally. It is not too hard to make a plate out of abs plastic or even plexi with a dremel to match the shape of the tweeter, then mount the tweeter to the plate.

Not much/any space under the back seats and you will want to have that somewhere you can get to it if you need to change a fuse. I currently have mine mounted in my center consol but will be moving it to the floor behind the drivers seat on the new install.

I just have mine by the amps mounted in the trunk, bad idea?! I thought it was the easiest way to go, less wire to run.

True, where can I get abs plastic at? I can probably rig up a smaller circle to fit into the mach housings

I mounted my tweeters in the mach460 tweeter pod, mine were a bit smaller (with the mounting frames/housing that came with them) what I did was super simple, I just used some foam tape, did two wraps around the tweeters then they stuffed in the stock openings nice and snug, yes making a plate might be better but in reality this was 10x easier and works just fine.

My Boston Tweeters were also smaller so I just made a cardboard mounting template. I traced the stock tweeter and cutout the center to slide the tweeter in for a compression fit. Then I taped them to the cardboard to keep them in place. I had done this originally to see how it would fit before I made a thin wood adapter but the cardboard worked so well I just left it in. I even screwed the cardboard into the stock tweeter locations with the stock screws.

I remember that I have an old under-dash stereo install thing somewhere, and its made out of plastic. I might be able to trace and dremmel out some new pieces. They dont really have to be perfect since theyre behind the cover, but it could be fun trying to fab something up.

exactly. My friend helping me with the speaker box said he has some very small hole saws, so this should be easy. I just need a little time. After this weekend I'll be back to work on the car and hopefully getting the stereo re-installed within a couple weeks. I have a million other things to do between work, my two cars, and and upcoming home project. I'm anxious to get everything done and its hard to focus on one thing at a time, lol

Any idea where to mount this at? I'm having trouble finding a place under the hood and near the battery. I also wish the "in" and "out" were swapped so I wouldnt have to mount this thing upside-down..

to the strut bar, the side of the firewall but as close to the battery as you can get it.

There is a small spot in the corner along the side of the fender, right next to the firewall, its the only flat, and empty spot I can find. Its a little over 18in away though. I do have fuses in my distribution block as well, does that help any? Otherwise I dont know where the hell to put it! lol

The JL amp I have is missing the remote gain control knob, and I cant find one online anywhere. Can anyone help?

ebay will be your friend there or else if you can figure out what the value of the potentiometer and make your own. Otherwise go check out your local jl dealer and I would not be suprised if their installers had one or two in the bottom of their toolbox.
