I was offered a trade for my car yesterday. I'll be looking at it today or tomorrow. 99 Cobra Convertible 181k miles Triple black. Stock, only mods appear to be shorty headers His car has a few paint issues, the rear window is separating from the top. What worries me the most: He says the car has an intermittent ticking around 2k rpms. Not always present. I've read that this can been a common problem with a lash adjuster or as bad as a spun bearing. I'm taking it to a friend of mine who is familiar with mod motors to look at it too. The guy who has it is a good mechanic who I've known for a while. He just not familiar with mod motors. I approached him with the trade. Any suggestions or advice? Things to look for? I'll look for the sticker. The ticking noise he's described is what has me worried. However, if it lasts this summer and I can save for a replacement short block next year, it doesn't sound bad.
181k miles is a bit high. The ticking noise could be a couple of things. A video or better description of specifically where the noise is coming from would help determine a little more about it. Is it an even up trade? Some pics of the interior and exterior would help too.
He didn't say where it was coming from. Even trade. I'm going to take a closer look at where it's coming from, what conditions it ticks, etc. I'm going to try and put it on a buddy's lift if I can. Here is what he said about it.
Preliminary, I'd say it seems like a good trade IMO. Post back once you find out some more on it. Would love to see this bad boy!
ur cars clean but that is a new edge cobra... Id check it out if there are no major problems, id do the trade.
... keep in mind he's taking a step "down" (NOTICE I USED THE QUOTES!!! LOL) he's going back in time 4 years. he's going back in technology from OBDII to OBDI. he's going back in engine generation. etc. etc. etc. face-value to face-value his car is worth a fair amount more than yours. Which is what worries me about the tick. Pulling a head on a 4v is a pricey event. ... . . he's probably looking to unload a 4v with a known problem in exchange for a car thats problem-free. the head tick is common on the c-head cobras, but keep in mind it should be pretty constant.
Thanks! He traded a turbo SN95 for this. He said he's followed my build on Facebook and really likes it. He flips cars pretty frequently. I'll keep that in mind though.
so... if A=B=C, than A=C --> meaning "your SN" = "a Turbo SN." ... once again, I'm getting a red flag.
Three words: new... edge... cobra. People buy these cars in wrecked and roller condition for a couple grand. Exhaust leak sounds can be also be misdiagnosed. Unless it's a complete and obvious piece of crap, do the trade.
I wouldn't... I test drove a 99 cobra last Saturday, was dead set on trading mine in pending test drive. Needless to say it was beat to hell and I found out why it seemed "too good to be true". Go take it for a ride and see what it's got, but you have had your car and know its story, a new car=new issues.
181k is high. But well maintain they can last. . If you like it go for it.. Enviado usando mi SHP-L710 usando TapaTalk
I wouldn't, your car looks so much better and if your looking for more power or because its newer? 181k miles is a lot, how many miles does your car have?
I dont see anyway this is a good trade. I'd much rather have a clean, health and sexy SN with I'm assuming lower miles then "upgrading" to a new edge cobra that has questionable health and high mileage. Just my opinion, run forest run.
Way to many miles imho. Even if the engine was fine. Still 181k on everything else.. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using Tapatalk
