Re: guess what....

i had a set but decided to sell them because if i was going to put in new cams might as well go all out.. and i'm just gonna get ported PI heads with some kind of after market cams.. but as of now i'm undecided on cams..

it's a pretty straight forward install.. shouldnt take more than a couple hours

Re: guess what....

I replaced both cams on a 4 cyl a couple weeks ago with a buddy, one cam was broken, The hardest part of the whole thing was the setup.. taking everything off and getting it out of the way and making sure you had all the right parts to put back on, the whole process really wasn't that hard, just undo the bolts on the cams from the outside in, do them all evenly, not just taking out one bolt at a time or u might break a cam :| then when u bolt it back in just get the right torque specs and tightening sequence. and look up where the notches one the gears should be for timing.

I could get all this information for you off alldata if you want. with pics, cause the pics make everything easier.

the only thing i wouldn't know is if you put them in timing according to the original motors specs or in time according to the engine you're putting them into :dunno:

i dont think it will be terribly hard. the only thing im worried about is timing. i dont know how to set that and i dont want to screw that up.

Re: guess what....

the hardest part will be the timing, which is a piece of cake provided you set everything to TDC (top dead center) before you take the chains off. the most time consuming part of it all will be the disassembly and assembly of everything. when i did mine, it took me about 7 hours or so because 1) it was the first time ive ever worked on the cams on any car and 2) i took pictures of pretty much where all the hoses/wires went so i wouldnt miss something when i assembled it.

do a little research online, there are multiple how-to guides online, and most of them are identical. some will tell you little tricks that you can do to make things easier, others will go into better detail than others, and some will give you plenty of pics. basically, just read thru them all and everything will be pretty clear.

if you do happen to have any questions though, let me know and ill help you with as much as i can

I know you don't want to remove the timing cover but it is a good idea to do so anyway. you should check the condition of gears ,guides, chain, ect. also I would suggest paint markers or nail polish to color code every thing so you know where it goes. I would also get some kind of prelube so nothing is dry when you put it back together and check any wearable parts. I have had friends rebuild engines and they put it back together and they never checked water pumps or other internals. and they had to tear it down again. just take your time and it should go smooth

The tool is called different things, but Anderson Ford Motorsports sells their tool called "Cam chain retention tool" P/N AF-0602 from their parts catalog, but I've read that some have had issues with it not holding that well. Slipping as it's fairly thin? Ford sells one as well, but it's much more expensive. You might find them used out there since there are basically used once, then not used again in most cases.

The good tool is made by OTC, also handled by Snap-on. Or you could pull the front cover.

As other's have said, it's not hard, just very time consuming. It'll take you a solid day your first time, if you tear it down and yank the front cover off.

I'm really subsricing, so if oyu have any questions at all, go ahead and ask here.
