I have to change the pickup in the 95. So the distributer I think has to come out. Anyone ever do this before? I have changed the coil and ICM and it still doesn't get spark sometimes.

Its been a while, but here it goes...

Pull the cap...mark where the rotor is in relation to the motor (this way you can get it halfway back in timing when you put it back together)

Undo the bolt at the base of the dist and pull the hold down with the bolt out

pull the dist...

Back me up guys... its been a while...

Yep, just mark where the rotor is so you can get it back into place.

Unbolt the hold-down, and pull up on the distributor and it will come right out.

There's a small pin that holds the gear in place that will need to be knocked out to disassemble the distributor, otherwise the rest of it just unbolts, including the hall effect sensor.

Paul.

So it doesn't need to be at TDC to pull it? I was thinking of just replacing the entire distributor with an MSD. On a stock motor with the ICM on the fenderwell which one would you get? Its a 95gt.

The stock distributor is more than adequate. Just keep it.

No, it doesn't need to be at TDC as long as you reinstall it in the same place.

Spend your money on something else.

Not too bad. Getting the gear off and lined back up was a pia. I marked everything so it would go back exactly as it came off. Would have been alot easier to just replace the whole distributer but I had nuthin better to do today and learned a thing or 2.

Thanx for your help. Greatly appreciated :thumb:

No prob. Lots of folks think taking a distributor apart is difficult - until they see it done. Can o' cake. :)

Kinda late now but you can still get an idea if your work is going to be worth it.

Put an ohm meter on the leads to the pick-up and take a reading. They used to be around 1,200 - 1,500 ohms when they are good, but that was a long time ago when I was in that loop so my memory of that could be wrong. You can also get the spec from the Mitchell's Manuals at the library. This could have been done with the distributor in the engine.
