HUGE PROBLEM!!!!!

Alright so i just got done doing my gt40 swap and in the process of taking off my alternator i broke the stud that holds on the hot wire (the one that goes to charge the batt). not really thinking to much of it at the time.. so finished my swap and went to put the alter back on.. well my friend who was helping me swore up and down that the wire that attaches to the stud that i broke was simply the ground. so he proceeded to ground it to the intake (unscrewing a stud out of the intake and sticking the wire on the stud then calling it a day..) well we started it and something fried.
*just so no ones complains to me i had a bad feeling that it wasnt just the ground.. but ya know how you tend to trust ppl who seem to have more knowledge than you? never again.

So i replaced the actual hot wire, checked my fuses, got a new alter, and checked some other alter wires.

Now my problem is that the alter is not working. I can jump the car off and start it just fine. i take the cables off and hop in the car to watch my battery die, after the battery dies all my gauges die, and after the gauges die the car will die soon after.

does anyone know how to fix this?? I cannot seem to find it. any help will be appreciated.

I would guess that the alternator went south when the battery wire was grounded. Can you take the alternator to someone who can test it for you. If it tests okay then I would suspect that one of the fuseable links blew. Test the cable for continuity.

Let me get this straight; The alt. output wire was grounded to the batt. negative post?!

There should be a fuse in your high current fuse block (the one in the eng. bay) that protects the charging circuit.

well yes actually? i guess the hot wire or the positive term was grounded. i checked all my fuses. unless its one of the huge block silver ones?

THe high current fuses he is talking about are the big block ones with the clear top. they are different colors inside, and have little pieces of metal in there too.

i had one of my employees at autozone swap the power and ground on a battery and it blew one of the main fuses. (the big ones with the clear top)

I did the fuses but I'll check again. Is it possible I fried the ground? Cause I know that one of the grounds off the batt (the smaller of the two) deff glowed when I first started it up. I replaced that wire how ever.

you have to take off the bat. wire from the alternator and check if you get battery voltage on the wire with the battery connected. If you don't them you have an open circuit or a broken wire going to alternator. Time to check the wiring diagrams

You wouldn't even have to take off the Alt. output wire. Connect a DMM to the batt. with the car running and measure. If it's 13.5v-15v then that wire is good and the alternator is working. I do agree with checking the wiring diagram though.

I had another buddy ask around. He said that he wouldn't be surprised if I killed the batt. He said he had a very similar problem and all it was was a dead cell in the batt? Any thoughts? I am going to bring the batt to have it checked and rechecked tonight just to see.

You very well could have fried the battery. It shouldnt have killed your alternator (if you broke the stud you'll need a new one anyway) since your alternator was not connected at the time, if I'm reading right. Put another battery in the car and see what happens. Your buddy that hooked the hot wire to ground should have one you can borrow.

now that i know what it was i think i might with a 1/2 in. lol i have a guy who is really good with wires he was looking at it yester and today and thinks he might have found the problem. we shall see around noon tomorrow! wish me luck.
