Currently driving a 97 GT with a Mac ORH and Mac catback. Ever since I bought the car, my mom has bitched about how loud it is. And since she's best friends with all of our damn elderly neighbors, she takes their complaints concerning the topic to heart and therefore is sure to let me know about it. I understand that the car has some volume to it, but really... there are several trucks and other vehicles in the surrounding houses just as loud as mine. To make the story short, I'm being forced to quiet it. My dad thinks that simply swapping the muffler is going to help. It may, but I refuse to sacrifice a decent tone for less volume. I understand the the ORH will be a prime factor in adding volume to ANY setup, but I'm left pondering questions I thought you guys could answer.

I'm looking for the cheapest way to quiet it down somewhat significantly and still have a great tone. If I go with a muffler, I'm going to first have to figure out what size muffler will work. The Mac catback was on there when I bought the car and I know nothing about pipe size, inlets, dimensions, etc. If I can find that out, what brand would work best?

OR... Would a new midpipe be the best option for quieting it down? That's obviously more expensive and I'm trying to stay as cheap as decently possible, but I understand that a simple muffler change may not knock the volume down as much as I'd like (if a replacement is even possible).

What do you think folks?

move out... :) lol. .... :-D or cruise through the 'hood in 3rd at 1,000 RPMs instead of 2nd at 3,000 RPMs :p

I would personally put on a different cat-back and see if you like it... thats the cheapest way to go, especially if you buy used. There are race mufflers on the classifieds right now for 100 bux :-D

i would go have 2 cats welded on. that will be the cheapest option for you. you will not loose the tone but it will quiet your car down enough

Oh believe me, day or night I already try to keep it as quiet as possible. I DO tend to leave and come home late at night going to and from the gym, but when I do I'm idling into the street and creeping into the garage at 500 RPMs, damn near killing it.

I was looking into catbacks and although I can get one used for a couple hundred, most clips I find are still decently loud because of that ORH.

How much am I looking at for two cats and what type?

catted mid pipe would make the most difference in sound from my experience. I doubt my neighbors like my car but I make every attempt to idle out of the neighborhood and not make enemy's.

lol, while that might work, you are either gonna get charged for threatening the elderly or giving them a heartattack.

cheapest way of doing this is getting two Hi-Flow cats from Magnaflow and have an exhaust shop weld them on.

most mustang midpipes and catbacks are 2.5" in diameter, very rarely are they 3". i believe yours is 2.5" as well.

See if you can get some trades, An X pipe is usually quieter than an H and one with cats will be better. My Borla XR1 catback is ultra quiet up to about 2800 rpms. I see those mufflers for sale every now and then.

True! ^

i can barely hear my car at dile with my bassanis but, you have chambered mufflers which will make your car louder than a H pipe at WOT.

run no mufflers for a while then after some more complaining cause it'll be load as **** put em back on. if they start complaining again take em back off. Keep doing that every time they complain and i think they should eventually get the message. :thefinger:

This is a perfect opportunity for long tubes.

Mom: Quiet your car.
You: I would, but I sold my stock parts to afford these parts, and I don't have the cash to buy either stock stuff (call the dealer for a price on a stock H...LOL!!!) or aftermarket stuff.

Now mom is bad guy, and has choice between coming back and offering to help pay to fix problem, or leave you alone. If number one is the answer, order longtubes and catted H. Keep the tone you want, reduce volume until WOT.

As for all the people who complain about how hard they are to install, call the wambulance. Weekend project. Father and son bonding time, and every other excuse to get your mom to help buy them.

You could be really sneaky and tell her you want to buy a catted H, she pays, and you pay for the LTs to go with them, and don't mention them. :D

you can try to find some junkyard cats off a GM Denali, or Escalade. those are supposed to be a decent sized cat for our cars. (or atleast thats what ive heard).

but your best bet is the $100 cats off American Muscle. On your way to the muffler shop, do a 6k launch out of your drive way.
