I was planning on a simple GT40 top end for my stock 5.0. However a friend of mine is changing directions on a project of his and has a complete rebuilt 351W, roller block rebuilt GT40 heads and a Comp cam. I was originally going to just get the heads from him but he said he'd sell me the whole motor for $800. I know for a 351 swap I'm looking at a new intake, swap headers, oil pan, flywheel and tune. It's going to cost more than a simple H/C/I swap. But I feel that I'd have a better platform and a new motor as well. Thoughts?

You would love the newfound torque the 351w would bring. For a street project (>6000 rpms) the GT40 heads would be just fine. Of course, you won't make 500 hp with those heads but that doesn't seem to be what you're after. I would add at least a Performer RPM (or something similar) intake and have fun. The 351w block will handle most anything you throw at it and you can always upgrade the HCI later on for a power boost (or add forced induction) You can bargain shop for some of the parts required to get the swap done.

I agree the extra torque through the low end will be a nice gain . Like said a nice breathing intake will help the combo for sure . I'm guessing you get his swap oil pan as well ?

Food for thought:

351W Street/Strip/Bracket race swap kit; includes heavy duty motor mount kit, oil pan kit, 1 5/8" shorty headers with ball & socket type collectors. headers are coated

Thanks! I'll check that out. I'm not sure of what oil pan he has on that. I've been looking at the ProPoducts Qualifier intake.

If it's built well, you can't go wrong. I don't think a stock hood will clear, don't quote me because there are intake options, but that's why the '95 Cobra R had a cowl.

Yes I forgot to list that. I was planning on a cobra hood, but hopefully could find a cowl for a good price. I'm not looking for huge power. Just reliability and a good platform.

I would skip on the gt40 my self.. Sell them and find a better flowing head.. You can find all the swap parts cheap if you look around. Does it include anything else.. I seen complete 351 for 400 bucks around here..

I plan on getting some better flowing stuff down the road but the GT40s are already there, built and assembled. The motor is a fresh build from the block up. All new stuff.

I think it's the only logical thing to do. :) This will change my mod list and list of things to do by a lot.

1st, if you do this swap PLEASE start a thread. My dream is a 351 swap.
I'm not 100% sure on this, but i think they make low profile motor mounts for this that would solve your hood clearance issue. i could be wrong though. 351 is pretty much always worth it. i mean crap its 351 cubic inches at the fraction of the cost of a stoker motor.

Well after adding everything up I'm not sure about this anymore.

Motor: $800
Swap header: $200
Intake: $500
Chip: $300
Tune: $400?
Injectors:?
Flywheel: ?
Hood: $200-400

All just to get it on the road and still make around the same power as a GT40 Head,Typhoon intake and Comp 273 cam motor. I'm just not sure I want to jump into all that money and work at once. I think I'll just do a bolt on motor for now and look at some engine swpas later. I'm pretty sure I can buy the complete heads from him for under $400.

Ok. Tune and chip is usually one price together.. You might be looking at 400_600 for tune and chip..
You can get the fox convertible mounts k member spacers and make it fit under the hood.. Be tight..

You can do it man. Just buy it piece by piece. And when you get it all bought you'll be happy with it. Go for it!

I'd do just a top end swap. It'll run just as fast and you'll save the extra thousand bux.

Yeah that's what I'm thinking. If I have to piece something together, I think I'd rather it be an S-trim. I'm thinking that the moneyfor the swap specific parts could be spent better elsewhere.
