I'm still waiting on my axle bearings, but they should be here any day. This will be my first rear end to rebuild, so does anyone know of a guide or a how to while i'm doing this? i'm sure i can figure it all out, but it would just be better to have something to follow.

i'll be installing new axles, carrier, ring and pinion, seals and bearings.

i refuse to do my own rear end... there is some many things that you can screw up on and if you screw up on one little thing it can destroy your rear end.

Good Luck and a Pat on the back in all i can give you

I don't know about the carrier, ring and pinion, seals and bearings, but changing axles is one of the absolute easiest things I've ever done with my car. This is no joke, the hardest thing about it when I done it was filling the diff with fluid.

I did mine last year. It wasn't hard, but it was very time consuming and frustrating. Getting it apart is the easy part, but putting it back together was a treat. The hardest part is shimming the carrier for proper tooth alignment on the ring gear and pinion. Those little shims that you have to put in there are thin and they bend very easily. Just remember that after you have your proper shims added to each side, you must add an extra bunch of shims (i can't remember the amount) to each side, to set your bearing preload. If you don't do that all of your hard work and money will be wasted, and your rear end will go down the crapper. Here are a couple of websites that helped me. I hope your install goes well. :thumb:

Thanks guys. I was going to pay the $150 labor to have it done, but i bought more expensive parts and decided to do it myself. I replace an axle bearing in my Mach 1 with my dad a few years ago and it wasnt hard, but the carrier and ring and pinion are what i'm worried about.

All of the parts going in:

Moser 31 spline hardened axles
03 Cobra 31 spline carbon clutch carrier
FMS 3.73's
Moser axles bearings and seals
chrome rear cover

i'll keep ya'll updated and probably will ask a bunch of questions.

Don't forget to put in the new races for the bearings in the differential. Just take your time setting the pinion bearing pre-load. if you overtighten, you have to put a new crush sleeve in and start over.

i havent messed with the rearend in the mustang but if u really want to and have the proper tools you can. i had my trac loc rebuilt by my mechanic but i have tore apart the rearend in my 79 f150 4x4.

i replaced the seals in the front axle (cake) and put a locker in the rear end (not cake lol) honestly the directions were terrible and if i would have listened to myself i wouldnt have had any problems but i didnt and it was a little bit of a pain. but i have driven it for 2+ years and no issues so it seems to be fine.

after fucking with my pickup i just decided to have my mech do the mustang rebuild and i am kind of glad i did. it cost much more than i thought it would (honestly the parts were way to spendy unless he was trying to hide labor in the "parts" price) :dunno:

For $150 labor i would let someone do it. Most of the time they want the rear housing OUT of the car for that kinda money though. Hell with the rearend out of the car EVERYTHING is easy to get at. Most places I have seen are $250 and up for just labor. A good rebuild kit and new clutch paks are going to be right around $160 + shipping. Get good stuff, no sense in half-assing it. :)

i dont need a rebuild kit or clutch packs, i bought an 11k 03 cobra carrier. i dont need anything rebuilt, i'm just putting in all new parts into my rearend. paying the $150 labor now is out of the question, i already spent all of my money on my parts. if i were to pay to have someone do it i would have just left it 28 spline.

i just wanted some guidance on putting everything together, but the carrier is not beiong rebuilt
