K member Problem Help fast

Got the QA1 bolted up and all, but when i go to turn the steering wheel, It doesnt want to turn. The steering shaft is rubbing on my header. Anyideas on how to "dent" the header at all so that i can get that 1/8 inch clearance.

Will running the engine for a minute or two get the header hot enough to bend it?

wow i was reading this in hot rod about 20 minutes ago while taking a shit haha

they said it's okay to tap it with a hammer. I'd feel much more comfortable having the car idle for alittle bit and get it heated up and then put a rag or something inbetween the hammer and the header and hit it.

that's just my .02 from what i was reading lol

Use a long pipe, hopefuly the header bends before the sahft.

couldn't get it to bend. I'm going to try slotting the steering shaft moiinting holes possibly or just get some offset rack bushings.

I don't think offset rack bushings would help :dunno: Best bet is to bend it man.

BFH. What part of the steering shaft is hitting? Is it a stock shaft?

by bend it, i mean the primary tube, not the steering shaft, just so were clear lol

yea stock steering shaft. Let me go take a picture. But i think im ogint to try this.

"unbolting the base of the column where it attached to the firewall. I think it's three studs, but anyway take a dremel tool and slot the stud holes to allow the column to be moved side to side or up and down. From underneith move the steering shaft so it doesn't hit, then tighten down."

BTW Offsets didnt work...

How do you dent the header enough? I cant get it to clear all the way.

Like is said, if prying on it with a long pipe don't dent it enough, try a hammer through the wheelwell if you can.

Tried that too. Even got the torch out to see I'd it would bend it... And we still have no go. Now tring to take the k member back down and one of the pos' 15 mm bolts won't back out. Just spins and spins... And to think we were going to get bottle passes tomorrow.

my 98's longtubes rub the steering shaft slightly. Not enough to lock it up but it does in fact rub. I didn't bother denting it though.

it will hinder the steering though... It rubbs and you can feel it quite a bit on the steering wheel.

You shouldnt have to dent the primary tube on those headers. I bet that crappy QA-1 K-member has something to do with it. I just swapped mine out this weekend because it messed up the geometry of my front end. Ditch the QA-1 and get a UPR setup. Night and day difference in fit and quality.

Plan on the UPR.

But i may just sell it and keep the money for "back up"

The 31 spline stuff is all here except the spool now, that i need to order again...
