Is this a recent problem or has it always been like this? You are finger lubing the o ring before install right?

No double o ring yes I am oiling the o ring first. I didn't notice it the first couple of oil changes. Maybe the last 3. This last time there was oil all over the rack and lines and frame and control arm but it wasn't double o ringed.

Good. I just replaced the rack and pressure lines. The leak was clearly motor oil.

remove the filter, clean off the spindle and mounting plate, and look to see if there is anything tuck to the mounting plate itself, or if it has any kind of markings, deformations, or irregularities that could cause a poor seal

Ok and if it has marking or scarring on the sealing surface what's the best way to freshen it up

A dart based 331 stroker usually takes care of it......

it depends on the extent of the scratches.. If it is deep enough to cause a significant leak like that, it's probably
nothing that can be saved... But I would do as Addermk2 suggested, then cross that bridge when you come to it.

You would be surprised what you can do with a really clean surface, some JB weld, and a razor blade
