I've read countless times that Audis, especially the older ones, are reliability nightmares. If you're planning on getting a car you're going to keep for a while I'd get something with a great name in reliability.

as for this statement. I will completely disagree. My buddy has a 87 audi 5000s that is running 26psi on a stock block with a aftermarket head gasket and on the stock tranny. The quattro tranny's in those cars are bullet proof. The car is solid. It has twice as many miles than my 94 stang and still runs strong.

I'm not talking about the drivetrain, it's not hard to make an engine and transmission that lasts a long time. I'm talking about all the stupid problems those cars have, many of them being electrical. They can nickle and dime you to death quite easily. If you read a lot of the owner reviews many say the cars are constantly in the shop and they are too scared to own them beyond the warranty. Imo, that equals poor reliability.

As far as the cars being solid, that they are. I wish our Mustangs had the build quality of the newer Audis.

The newer audi's are just damn good looking and solid cars.

In my experience I haven't seen many electrical issues. The cool thing about the older audi's is they use mechanical fuel injection. There are quite a few audi 5000's around here and the people who own them own at least 5. They seem to think they are reliable. All I'm saying is to each their own. I haven't witnessed any electrical problems that any other car i've owned hasn't had. Hell my mustang has had more electrical issues than any car I've owned, I love it but that's my experience. I'm not going to say audi's are the best choice for a dd but they aren't horrible. I think a lot of it really depends on how well you maintain and treat the vehicle. Plus it's great to be able to completely lock the differentials in the winter and out perform 4 wheel drive trucks.

I guess I should have clarified, i wasn't talking about an old *** Audi 5000 but instead the B5-B7 year range. Before I bought my Lexus i was looking at both Audi and Mercedes and after reading MANY consumer reviews I was literally scared away from buying one. So far I'm very happy with my choice of daily driver.
