loose ignition?

after I turn the car off and take the key off, the door buzzer that normally alarms to tell you the key is in the ignition goes off no matter what is there. Normally I can just take the ignition with out the key, push it forward and then back really quickly and then it shuts off. What do I need to do to fix this?

No idea, but its a common problem for the sn95's i know. My 95 has the same problem as your 94.. cant remember if my 1997 GT did.

my 95 does the same thing. there seems to be a certain sweet spot you have to take the key out.

I'm hoping it is just the Cyl. lock...it comes out pretty easy, it's the part you stick the key into, have to turn it on & line up a hole, stick a smal allen wrench in it & slide it out...or something close to that. Mine does it too, gotta get moving on that.

I think that you are right. I haven't had to do this with my SN95 but I did with my Foxes. There is a wire to hook up that comes out of the lock cylinder and plugs into a wire that goes into the column harness. I hate that buzzer and always left it unhooked.

Theres that lip on the ignition that basically wraps around your key when its in the ignition, when you take the key out and it continues to buzz, slightly turn that lip until the buzzer goes off. Mine does the same thing all the time. I can also remove my key while it's running though lol

yea I was hoping for a more perminant solution. I am adding some gauges to the steering column surround and while it was off I thought it would be easy to fix. Just pulled it out today, with as easy as it is to pull out the lock cylinder seems like it should not be too bad.

96+ are a little different, the 94-95 dont have that little lip thingy.

And for the record, my sisters old V6 could be started without the key.

my ignition is all sorts of loose too, i can turn the thing that the key goes into and the car will start dinging like the key is in the ignition. its pretty lame.

From what i know. You can only start the car without the key only when the key has been pulled out WHILE the car was running.

If you turn the car off normally and remove the key normally then the car can't be started without the car.

Unless she had a different problem.

If your ignition cylinder will turn partially without the key or is loose to the point that it can make the the alert go off, be careful because chances are the actuator rod inside the column is loose, cracked or already broken and is waiting for the worst possible time to leave you stranded.
My cobra had that when I first bought it from my friend, and within a year it broke and for a while I was starting the car without putting a key in or even turning the cylinder. I removed the knee plate, dismounted the ignition switch box under the column and just started it that way.... what a pain in the ass.

I pulled it out yesterday and took a look but didn't see anything that I could do to tighten it up. I assume replacing it means that I would have two keys for the car, one doors/trunk and one ignition?

There is nothing to tighten... its in the column itself. Be careful when you turn the car on and off... because all you are gonna hear is a pop or hard click and then the cylinder is gonna spin freely because the rod is disengaged / broken.

Get a locksmith to rekey the trunk. This would be cheaper than the rekeying the ign. cylinder if you take out the trunk cylinder and take it to them with your new ign. keys. Do you have a PATS system? If you do you need to reprogram for the new keys or you will put the computer into theft mode.

I was looking at this again because I came across the selection at cj's

Maybe I missed it but it seems the most recent one is mid 80s? I can only assume that if cj's doesn't carry it, what are the chances autozone will? As easy as it is to slide out I would like to replace it before it breaks completely. Anyone have an idea where to get the cylinder to do this? I noticed that alot of the recently made cylnders allows you to use your old key, any chance we can get those for our cars?

I had the same problem.. I could even start the car with NO key in it at all. I got a new ignition cylinder from wolf(something) security. He made the ignition the same key as my doors/trunk etc just with a picture of my current key. No complaints at all, it fixed all the dinging issues and the cylinder is really tight. Real easy install too.

It is a universal system that allows you to "program" the tumblers to your existing key. I will be ordering mine shortly and let you guys know if it fixes it. If it does its a 5 mins install to pull the old one and install the new one so hopefully it will work.
