manuel steering

has anyone converted to manuel steering? whats all involved? and how much of a p.i.t.a is dd with? i do alot of curvy hwy driving

I have wondered what a manual rack would be like when trying to turn at a stand still..

Without my power steering hooked up the power rack turned pretty easy.. I am sure a manual rack will turn even easier.

Once your actually moving, not having power steering is a minor thing and not really noticeable as being different from a power steering car, at least that's how it feels in my 67. I'm sure the front ends are heavier in our cars compared to my 67 but it still shouldn't matter too much once you're moving. Sitting still and turning the wheel takes some work but it isn't impossible.

You're gonna be doing a LOT more steering. That's almost twice as much work you have to do. Seems kinda worthless. I would not bother with manual rack, unless the benefits of losing one were like gaining 50 hp from ditching the pump, and losing like 100 lbs of weight. If it's a daily driver, at the end of the day it will become more of inconvenience than anything else. I've driven a drag car on skinnys with a manual rack, and it was annoying as hell, and I would not say that I have the strength of the 12 year old girl. Manual steering on mustang still feels pretty numb, it will not have the response and the feel of the lotus or a miata, if that's what you are after.

Also, I'm pretty sure that all power racks are 14.xx:1 ratio. Can't remember the actual number of the top of my head.

Yeah for my 85,87,88 MR2 i had manual steering and loved it, but they also weighed in at just a tad shy of 2000lbs. I couldn't imagine it on a Mustang with Manual Steering.

my 78 had strong arm steering. over 25 it would get easier to turn but not throw you off road easy. parking lots was a workout. it did require two hands at the low speeds. we used to take it just for the workout sometimes. :laughing5: that car weighed less than my 95 by 800 lbs. too. i would not put a manual steering rack into a heavy daily driver and i like physical jobs.

Not sure about the stang, but i remember once at work trying to move a Range Rover on which the P\S had gone, i nearly rang Arnie to see if he wanted the job. ;)

There is a difference between the racks that are manual from beginning, and the ones where the power steering pump has died. Manual racks depend on leverage, which is why the ratio is wider. It makes it easier to turn. Since the power racks have hydraulic assist, they could be a lot tighter, but if the pump dies, they feel as if they are set in cement because leverage is a lot smaller by comparison to their manual counter parts. You can't really compare the two unless the ratios are the same.
