Alright so I want to make sure I get a good brand of oil and filter next week and I've always used Castrol GTX but this time I would like to go a new route.
I know alot of you guys swear by Motorcraft and I don't blame you but I just want some opinions.
Also just how many qts does our 4.6L PI motor REALLY take? I've heard 7qts.

I usually get the 5 qt jug and then 1 extra qt. During an oil change it takes just under 6 qts... but keep in mind, you never get ALL of the old oil out of there, so for a rebuild, or an engine transplant, it may take a bit more than 6 quarts.

I think I'll get 6 or 7 so I can flush out the old oil so I have 100% fresh oil

Get 7 just to be safe. If you don't crack open the 7th quart, you can always save it for later.

i always used moble1, but i've heard their recipe has taken a hit recently.

if you're going with all fresh oil (if the engine has been sitting for more than a month) I suggest going to your local performance shop and getting a bottle of zinc additive. It will help soften metal-on-metal wear during first start up.

If you have cats, use it only this one time, as prolonged use can clog cats.

Aren't you putting in a used motor Jones? You're not getting new bearings? Or breaking anything in are you?

I've run Valvoline on all my Mustangs, whether they are for race or not. Valvoline VR1 10-30 or 30, I was extremely pleased when I pulled my blown race motor and after 2 1/2 seasons of racing, the main bearings were so clean I'd re-use them.

I've always used the Supertech synthetic at walmart, it's cheap and does a nice job. I get whatever filter at walmart too as long as it's not Fram, last time I got a motorcraft and I think I've gotten purolator there as well.

Golden State from the gas station.

Clearly states "Use in engines 1967 or older, or lawn mowers."

But in all reality, any modern oil if changed frequently enough will be fine. Hell your putting a used motor in it. 90% chance right there it hasn't been taken care of like it should have. Better oil won't undo prior bearing damage. Use whatever and just change it when it gets dark.

Should have seen the mustang it was in. It was VERY clean, chrome cobra wheels, sonic blue paint job, immaculate black leather interior, and the motor, hell the motor looked brand new! Couldn't find a spec of grime anywhere on the motor. It's either been very well taken care of or it's a remanufactured motor

?? "used oil" ?

as for chaging it when it gets dark, some oils have cleaning detergents in them and they get dark almost instantly. -- Read that in a VW owners manual; take it or leave it.
