could someone please rate the difficulty of each. So far, i have been able to drop the K and install long tubes. and i have pulled the engine and tranny out of a buddy's 240sx. thats about the extent of my mechanical skills. I am thinking possible pi motor and 5 speed swap over winter. tell me what you think, my car is a 96 GT automatic with about 104k beat miles

PI motor swap is pretty much a direct swap. take one out, put another one in. the harness is the same, but you would need to reuse the NPI fuel rails. to make things easier, i would re-use all the NPI accessories (A/C, power steering, alternator, etc). all these things should be interchangeable between the years, but just to be on the safe side, i would just keep the NPI stuff. i know for a fact that these all mount the same way and in the same locations, the only difference may be the plugs. i know for sure the alternator plugs are different starting in 01.

as for the auto to 5 speed swap, the mechanical part of it is easy. all you have to do is remove the auto trans, replace the flex plate with a flywheel/clutch combo, install the 5 speed using a 5speed mount and 5speed cross member, replace the driveshaft yoke from the auto one with a manual one, and you are pretty much done under the car. under the dash, you would need to replace the single pedal assembly (brake only) with the 5 speed pedal assembly (clutch pedal and brake pledal), route the clutch cable into the cabin and install it all. the rest of it is electrical. you would need to wire it up so the speedo works, the reverse lights work, and if you wanted to, so that the car wont turn on without depressing the clutch.

i would say the engine swap is a good 3 out of 10 difficulty because of any parts you would need to reuse, the trans i would say is a good 8 out of 10 because of the wiring. thats compared to the 240sx engine you pulled.

trust me the trans swap isnt near as hard as you think it is.
i did it like 2-3 weeks ago. no problem at all...
if your doing the engine at the same time it would make it even easier.

As was said, trans swap was easy. If you are doing the motor too, just drop all of it out the bottom and call it a day.

well, i was thinking of doing the pi intake, and pi cam swap on the npi. then maybe 5 speed over winter. mainly because I cannot garentee the engine will drop in and fire right up. so i can have an extra engine and modify it as i get money.(i work at pizza hut) It is a 1999 engine with possibly 70k-80k miles and i dont know if it runs. i am told it turns over fine and has oil in it. basicly if i can get it for a good price, I would use it to start the engine work(maybe send it out) and stuff, so i can continue to drive the car. who knows, does that sound like a good idea? is there a way to test an engine with it outside of the car? because i wouldnt want to drop in a dead engine although the original car was wrecked so aparently it did run.

If you can give it spark and fuel, and it has compression (which you can test outside the car) it will run.

Now, that said, i would just put it on a stand, tear it down, put new bearings in it, ring's, and learn alot as you go. There's nothing wrong with the motor you have in now right? Having another on the stand is the way to go, then you can build at your leisure/budget, and swap when the time comes.

i really think that is the way i might go. as far as the 5 speed swap, does the t-45 use a cable clutch or hydrolic? if it is cable, then it would be alot easier. and is 99 a good year for the pi engine? i know there was different ones, just not sure.

Lets talk computers on a 5 speed swap. Do they need to be swapped too? Are we talking about the computer in the passenger side kick panel?
