looking for some guidance in installing a multi-media player in a 2001 cobra convertible with mach 460 sound system -- think i need a metra 71-5700 wiring harness -- it looked like it had the right connectors -- but it is also available in a 70-5701 that has 2 RCA connectors -- do i need them ? what are they for ? or am i nowhere near where i need to be ......many thanks
so your keeping the stock speakers and amps? A word of warning is that the amps are known to stay on and kill batteries and unfortunately there is not a good aftermarket replacement for the stock amps or speakers.
had not considered going that far -- just wanted to replace the radio/CD unit with an upgraded dash unit -- i confess to be addicted to android auto et.al. -- i appreciate the heads up -- and pray it doesn't come to replacing the whole system -- that is very certainly above my skill set .....
the deck has female RCA ports for 1. external amplifier, rt front and rear, left front and rear and 2. subwoofer, 1 and 2 -- thank you for your help --
from my experience the amps ford used from jbl liked a fairly high voltage input. I think they honestly just took the low power speaker level outputs and fed that to the amps. Because of this some decks do not have a hot enough rca signal to really get the amps to full volume and unfortunately it is hard to tell this until you hook it up. If if is lacking power you can always get what is called a line driver and that would boost the signal up to where the stock amps would be happier.
if I am following you with apologies for being slow -- I should get a Metra 70-5701 and connect the 2 RCA leads to which of the inputs on the dash unit ?
thr rest of the story is - I put this player in a 96 cobra convertible (I purchased late dec 2024) 3 weeks ago -- using a harness without the RCA leads and I was happy with the result - sounded good to me and was loud enough with the top down at 45mph - got to enjoy it for about a week before this young lady rear ended me and totaled the car - but the joy of driving a mustang again - after a 20 yr hiatus- had latched on and wasn't going to let go - so last week, I bought the 2001 cobra we are working with now -
also have been reading an old thread where you helped a Danish gentleman replace speakers and it really sounds tempting to go all the way and do a total upgrade -- if and when I just get the dash unit installed and working -- if you are still willing to take on that task --
The reason there are two models is because lower cost head units do not have low level RCA outputs connections. In this case the speaker outputs are fed to the amp directly. Better head units do have the RCA connections allowing the use of the wiring harness with RCA plugs. If your head unit has RCA out connections you can chose to use either harness. If it doesn’t have the RCA out, then use the harness without them. The advantage of the RCA connections is the sounds will be cleaner. The negative is you will lose some volume as ttocs described. unless you really like to blast the tunes I go with the RCA option when possible.
