I am stuck at work because my 96 GT has decided not to crank. When I turn the key to the start position, the car clicks and dies (kind of like a dead battery). I read the voltage of the battery, and its sitting right at 11.98. I'm thinking it may be the factory anti theft system, but i'm not sure. I need some help on the subject so I can get out of this place! Any ideas on what to look for to diagnose the problem?

And on which side of the motor is the starter? I can't see it from looking under the hood........

I believe the starter is on the passengers side under the exhaust manifold? If the car is clicking I think thats the sound of a bad starter, someone correct me if im wrong. Give it a few taps with a small hammer or a wrench and try to start it.

Got it running. A couple of guys I work with helped me out.... It was a corroded negative battery cable. You wouldn't believe how corroded that thing was... Thanks for the help guys.

I just replaced my corroded negative cable not 6 months ago. Glad you got it running. Make sure you change it though.

Yeah, I just slit it back about six inches until I found good copper, then I cut it and attached it to the connector. I'll have to replace it before too long, or its gonna bug the hell outta me. How much of a pain is it to replace it?

It's easy. Took me about 5 mins.

Replace the whole cable. The clamp-on terminals are crap! Might even do the pos. cable as well.

Question: My car is starting to get hard to crank again... I haven't gotten to replace the big ground wire yet, but when I checked it, its fine (still nice and shiny copper). The smaller wire that is attached to the clamp is completely corroded, at least 3 inches from the end. It runs to a connector, along with another black wire coming from the neg terminal. What is that connector for? Can I replace the wires running to it somehow or do I just need a new connector?
