Sorry I am new to this forum and I don't know exactly what to search for. I am having a problem with my stang. I have a 347 stroker with aluminum heads, and a laundry list of other mods. Well anyway the headers are getting so hot that they are melting the spark plug wires. All of the wires are plenty of far away from the headers. I am thinking that it is just not getting enough fuel with the 19lb injectors and it is running way lean. The reason that I havent switched to 24lbers is because I cant get the car to run on the 24lbers with my 75mm 24lb granatelli maf.

Off the bat, I'm going to say your timing is off....WAY off as in retarded. Retarded timing means that you plugs are firing WAY later than they should so the combustion process is CONTINUING in the exhaust pipes causing excessively high temps. IF you're timing is correct, make sure its advanced and NOT retarded (been guilty of that myself). IF you're sure the timing is correct on your balancer...are you still running the stock balancer? It could have easily slipped on you and is not indicating wrong. The other thing that can cause it is WAY too much fuel...again....not burning completely off before the exhaust valve opens and the process continues in the exhaust. If you're running excessively lean, you Exhaust gas temps should be low SO, even though, I say your 19lb injectors are NOT enough for your motor, they wouldn't cause your headers to get overly hot...unless your fuel pressure is CRANKED way up. What is you fuel pressure set at?

As for the injectors and MAF not co-operating. Did you have a chip burnt? What problem are you having it running bad? Have you tried clocking or rotating the MAF to help improve its signal? Get back to me and we'll try to get you sorted out.

I haven't checked the timing yet, I set it at 10 degrees. I am running a 28oz Fluidamper. I thought that when it was too lean that it would get hot, just what I was told. I did not have a chip burnt, again I was told that you dont need to burn a chip to switch to larger injectors. My fuel pressure is set a 38lbs. I have tried to do everything with that maf I think that I have decided that it is just bad.

Ok....Sorry, I had diesels on the mind when I typed that...

WITH A GAS MOTOR, It goes BOTH ways.... PEAK EGT usually occurs at 14.7:1 A/F Ratio or Stoich...meaning the "perfect ratio" to burn off all fuel...but this ratio is too lean and unstable in a gas motor so you obviously to richer. This cools down the EGTs to a point but going WAY fat is going to pick them back up...b/c then you begin to burn raw fuel in the headers. Going LEANER than 15:1 will cool them down b/c you have an abundance of air and little fuel so a shortened burn time is the result, generating less heat and power. If the car spits and pops in the top end and misses, you could be starving for fuel. Just so you don't think I'm yanking you around....read this...

honestly, I don't think you're running pig rich. You might be right there at the High EGT lean point OR you timing is completely screwed up. Make SURE you're at 10 degrees ADVANCED and NOT 10 degrees RETARDED...TRUST ME, I've done that and had very similar results to what you described.

As for a chip, no you don't HAVE to have a chip to run bigger injectors but running EVERYTHING you have and NOT getting it tune isn't exactly the best route to take. There is alot of power and peace of mind to be had from a dyno tune...knowing the car is RIGHT.

Ok that helps alot, I was thinking that is was too lean. I am also having a drivability issue, the car does not want to idle most of the time, do you think a tune will compensate that problem? If so should I get a dyno tune or do a mail order tune? I really appreciate all the help.

Also when I put the stroker back in this time around I put a block off plate over the EGR port, will that make a difference?

Blocking off the EGR will affect your over all driveability for sure without a tune to turn it off. Mail order tunes are hit or miss. Your BEST solution is to always take the car TO a tuner and have it done on the spot on the dyno. You've got ALOT of mods to be running around with only 19lbers and no tune....
