Well if she's not complainin go with the wagoneer!! That's really cheap. What motor is in it? ^ The old toyota p/u with the sfa will run forever them motors are pretty solid. The drivetrain was pretty stout too for being a mid size import truck.

It has a 5.9 AMC engine in it.
And thats about the going rate for a nice one around here. I can pick up a similar one that needs some glass replaced for @ $1200. Non lifted nice ones go for @$2000-2500.

Depends on what you are wanting for a daily.. I've got a little Mazda Protege to huff around in (24+MPG in town w/ A/c on),
But a little ranger might not be too bad.. And if you get bored with it down the road you can v8 swap them pretty easy...
But IMO, based from all the vehicles i see at work, I wouldn't buy a jeep, or at least one with the 4.0 straight 6...

the inline 6 4.0 is one of the most reliable engines ever, and it makes great power (unless its in a jeep grand cherokee, they are just way to heavy for the 4.0)

I was going by personal experiences/close friends experiences... I personally know 3 people with 4.0 liter equiped Jeeps.. A guy i work with
takes very good care of his 98 Cheerokee, oil changes every 3mo/3,000 mi, got it from his parents with 25,000 mi on it, and it now has around
96K and smokes like a chimney and still has the imfamous exhaust leak from the manifold, after it's been changed once. Another guy i know
with a 96 Wrangler also takes very good care of his Jeep (actually works at a "Quick Lube" place) and just driving down the highway everything
fine, then all of a sudden the oil pump went out and before he could pull over to the side, his engine locked up. Not to mention every
single one I see has a cracked Exhuast Manifold, oil leaks out the wazzo, and even with regular oil changes- burns oil. But everyone has their
own opinions about everything, that just happens to be mine.

funny, ive known so many people with inline 6 4.0 liters. including myself. we all beat the hell out of them and they all ran fine. mine was all original with 370 000kms on it and it ran amazing. i even took it on a 3 day driving trip, i mean straight driving we drove in shifts all the way across canada, it only stopped running to get refueled. i was part of an XJ club, the general rule of thumb was the 4.0 liter oil pump lasting around 500 000kms ...seems to hold up pretty true in all of my experiences. yes they have qwerks and exhaust manifold leaks, but id trust one to never leave me stranded as it never did , i mean the whole jeep was ALL original ,engine ,tranny, transfercase, both axles, and i beat the mother of god straight out of it everyday. to know someone out there in this world doesnt like the 4.0 liter breaks my heart in peices.... i shed a tear.

The manifold crack is pretty common lol. That's strange you know so many people who have had problems with them. Most of my friends, and dads friend have a good experiences like pete has.

This is actually the first place I've heard any bad things about the 4.0L.

Back in the day I had a 74 Jeep Cherokee with 33's on it. I was lucky if I got 10mpg, but back in the mid/late 80's who cared. Gas was $1.25 a gallon. But it was a rust bucket. I had to use screw drivers to keep the drivers and passenger windows up. It would have been a great mud truck, but I needed a tow vehicle so I sold it and have no regrets.

I think a Jeep with big wheels would be a bad idea, I really do expect gas prices to go back up over $3.00 a gallon, maybe even back to $4.00+. At that point 9mpg would totally suck, unless it was play only.

I like the xjs alot. Or even a older Toyota with the sr22 in em.

I have a 89 toyota 4x4 truck with a 22re (fuel injected). 300,000+miles on a stock engine.
With only minor mods they can be quite o/r capable.

I am some what taking the MPG into consideration and thats why i haven't gone 100% into buying a Wagoneer but it would see about 4 days a week of action during the Winter as my cold weather DD then once Spring breaks it would probably get used 1 or 2 times a week in combination with the Mustang.
I'd put about 100-150 miles a week on it max so while 10MPG sucks it wouldn't kill me too bad.

I'd drive it while i was finishing the Mustang over the Winter then next Summer i would actually pull the 360 and rebuild that with higher compression and a Edelbrock H/C/I package. That should improve the MPG's by @ 2MPG and bump HP considerably. The AMC 5.9 has low CR's so maybe thats why they are slugs plus the Ford Carb is supposed to be a POS.

I think rotating it with my Mustang during the week and driving the 09 Escape on the weekends/trips wouldn't be that bad. Now i just have to find one with minimal rust and the right price :)

Good luck with it man, those old wagoneers are sweet!

That jeep 4.0 litre is no joke. My buddy had a 89 cherokee. when he got a new truck he gave it to his mom to drive, and then she sold it to his cousin. The thing went about 2 years without an oil change and it finally gave up.

But if you get a ranger, then you can swap in a explorer V8 and do these all day in the winter lol...

I had my XJ sunk in about 4ft of water for 24 hours and it runs like the day it was bought! I can't kill mine. It's for sale right now but realllly don't wanna sell it (pops is making me sell it because of lack of space). I'm putting tags back on it and driving it around town just to get it out with the forsale sign on it.
