So. My FR 4.10s are run in. Nice dry day. Took the car out for a WOT run and hard launch. I`m not the hard launch kinda dude but I thought I`d try it anyway.
Car is a 2003 GT Auto. Diablo 93 tune, Accufab plenum TB, K&N, catback etc. You get the picture. BEFORE the 4.10s went , on stock 17s and 3.27s the car could spin a tyre, no problem and chirp 1st/2nd easily.
Now after the gears I`ve added 18s with Michelin Pilots 295/35/18s.

Same launch. OD off and Traction control off. No spinning. 1st gear felt longer than I thought it would. Into 2nd there was a bit of slip then on to 3rd. Absolutely fuss free. I wasn`t expecting that.

Whats the deal? Was i expecting too much from the gears? It either feels like I`m down on power or I have plenty traction. I mean the car certainly tramps to 3 figures in no time. It just doesn`t feel as `frantic` as I thought. I watched a couple of 4.10 videos on youtube and they seemed lmore `fun`.
Any thoughts?

Was the cars on YouTube 5spds?

That's weird that you feel like 1st is longer now...maybe its revving higher?

Possibly 5 speeds buddy but still, Some guy on a video commented on his 07 auto with 4.10s he span into 3rd?

1st gear isn`t longer than it was (it was ridiculously long before) but still longer than I had imagined. :dontknow:

295 is a pretty big tire, although I don't know if you were running the same width before. 18's also more rubber to try and break. Maybe you just had a badass launch?

You put wide, and really heavy wheels/tires on. Its going to feel lazy.

The gears really do help. Especially on a modular motor like yours.

On top of that, deeper gears (numerically higher) have a tendancy to spin the tires less accelerating than say 2.73's or 3.08's. Cant explain it, just does.

To be honest the new wheel and tyre combo wasnt much heavier than the stockers if I mind right. Anyway, I have no real complaints about the car, I`m just wondering.

dont forget the overall tire circumfrence will effect the ability to to spin the tire with it being wider and taller.

Makes sense now Duff when you put it that way. I used the gear and tyre calcs and according to them my actual ratio is near 4 than 4.10. Just with all the talk of `blowing tyres off` and `1st gear is useless` comments with 4.10s I expected that maybe. Thats obviously either with stock size 245s or $hit tyres or both? :dontknow:

So, does that mean I can save for a supercharger? :headbang: No seriously. Maybe I could go a small shot of gas or a low boost blower. No?

I would call your Diablo tuner mechanic and ask if your 93 tune should be adjusted to take the new gears into consideration. Shift points might be something they check into also.

Stock 17's are much lighter with a stock 245/45/17 then a fr500 with a 295 tire on there. Even with a 4.10 it's still a good bit more weight. The stock wheels weigh in at about 17 lbs. The fr500's i think are about 27-30 pds ( correct me if i am wrong) but then you add on the tire and you have added a significant amount of weight.
