overheating problem with 94

hello everyone, i'm kinda new to this forum and to 5.0s, so i'll have a lot of questions about them

i bought my car a few months ago. when i first put the motor in i had overheating problems. i dont have a timing light, so i had a firends dad do it for me at 12 degrees i beleive. this still didnt completely fix the overheating, so i replaced the thermostat. since i have had the car i have put 3 different thermostats in the car, right now i think it has a 180. after putting in the 180 i didnt have any problems for a probably 2 months, then it started again last night. the guage jumps all over the place, rather than just getting hot, it gets hot, then cold, then really hot, then warm and so on. so i need to put in another thermostat? what keeps on making it get stuck? is there another problem? thanks everyone

if the guage just jumps back and forth kindly quick.... id say you have a air pocket in the cooling system... maybe a bad sending unit. did you turn the temp knob to full heat when you filled the cooling system?

no, i had the car running when i filled it, but i did not have the heat all the way up. i'll try that

You would have to be really unlucky to get more than 2 bad stats, it does sound like air, also sounds like you could have a blockage in the system also.

yeah i thought the same thing. i'm not sure where the blockage would be though. i rebuilt the motor only about 3k miles ago, and since then, to solve the problem, i have flushed rhe radiatior and overflow, checked the water pump and put in new stats. hopefully it is just an air pocket, i'm sick of this problem

i had the same problem with my 95, it did the same exact thing, i was the fan, the switch was melted and everything was warped so i had to replace the entire fan and everything

well, i pulled off the cap and let it run until it was at operating temp, turned on the heat and its gotten a lot better. i think i'm just going to repeat this for the next couple days and hopefully the problem will go away all-together

when you start it cold, turn the heat on.... then let it get hot... turn the car off and let it sitand get cold, then you can take the cap off... shouldnt take long for a 5.0 to purge the system

Same thing for me in my '95.

when you start it cold, turn the heat on.... then let it get hot... turn the car off and let it sitand get cold, then you can take the cap off... shouldnt take long for a 5.0 to purge the system

so after i let it run with the heat on, then cool down, then i remove the cap and start it again, and let it warm up with the cap off? do i put the cap back on with the engine off or on?

Same thing for me in my '95.

yeah the guy tuning my car said its common for our mustangs to do that

its really a major pain in the ass. i have repeated the steps over and over and it is still overheating

try spinning the fan blade manually (with the car off of course) it is very sharp so very gloves, that plastic is a bitch and will cut the hell out of you. If it doesnt move, im willing to bet you have a locked up fan, or the electronics on it went bad. The fuses for our year have a tendency to go bad and then not come on aftewr being blown/melted on the inside of the plug. I couldnt even get my plug apart.

it has something to do with your fan. i had the same exact problem with mine. your fan is either warped from the heat or its an electrical problem

well i'm pretty sure now its a head gasket. i'll know for sure tomorrow. i'm going to do a block test tomorrow

If its blown between the bore and the water jacket, it will pump air in, and suck water out, usually the first thing that goes is your heater.
Probably the air in your system is causing all of your symptoms.
You dont always get oil and water mixing, which is what most people expect, in fact i have a job today with very similar symptoms to yours, except he's putting in about a quart of water a week, and he's getting fed up doing it.

the 95 mustangs had a recall on a big fat circuit breaker that went inbetween the fan connector and wiring...

when you start the car, turn the a/c on and see if the cooling fan comes on... that will tell you if it works..
