Problems with car staying on.

I was driving home yesterday and all of a sudden the car shuts off. Ive had my 96 for 3 years and ive never had a problem with it. So i push it off to the side and try to start it and its fighting to stay on, then it shuts off again. I wait a good 5 min. and try again and it starts but just for a few seconds. I was able to drive it home but only cause i removed the iac plate that i installed but it was running and smelling funny. Could this possibly be the fuel filter?

or maybe the fuel pump is going bad?

i know the same thing was happening on my uncles chevy minivan... turned out it was his crankshaft sensor... or somehting like that... he said he had to take off his harmonic balancer and it was right there....

i would personally clean the MAF, clean the TB, and maybe check your fuel pressure...

You could try cleaning or replacing the IAC

well i replaced the fuel filter, replaced the stock iac valve gasket and cleaned the maf. so far so good.
