Doing a tune up on my 95 GT. Seems like I remember reading on another forum one time, that on these cars, you should not advance the timing due to the computer. Something to do with the way it controls timing, advancing would actually loose power not gain. Any truth to this? I am used to the older A9L, on my 93 I run 17 degrees spout out, no issues with 93 octane, and runs strong. New to the SN's, and just want to know what they like best, stock or advanced. I know other than stock 10 degrees, depends on combo, just want to know if there is any truth to the not advancing due to computer deal. Any help greatly appreciated! Joe

You can absolutely advance the timing, just remove the spout. 17 degrees seems a little crazy, I'd suggest 12-14 tops.

you realize 17 spout out is less timing then the car would have stock
eec-iv adds 16 degrees on top of the base at wot. car would run better with the base at 14 and the spout in. part throttle would also be stronger as well.

17 spout out is on my 93, A9L. And spout out is just for setting timing, and not less than stock. As soon as it is set, and you put the spout back in, timing doubles to 34 degrees total advance. Maybe you were thinking I meant locked out at 17?? Either way, no way I would run it at 17 total advance, which would be less than stock, correct, but not the case. Thanks, on letting me know if it is okay to advance on the 95. Not going any where close to 17 on it, mostly stock, that is just where my 93 (not stock) seems to run strongest with no ping/detonation etc. Thanks, Joe

No, I do not leave the spout out. I was using that as a reference point. As soon as I put the spout back in, the computer doubles this number. Was just referring to where I set my base on my fox. Guess I should have listed my total, not base, which I do not drive the car that way, only have spout out for setting. Thanks again for the help, Joe

its all relative to where you live, my 95 loved running with the base at 15 when i lived at 4500 feet above sea level in idaho. now that im back to 500 fasl (Feet above sea level) i have it back down to 13 or 12. and thats with 93 in the tank.
either way, it will help the car a bit.
if i were you i'd start out jumping 2 degrees up each time and if it pings drop it down by one. find the sweet spot and lock it in. but you probly already know all that.

just depends on how thick the air is where you live.
for me in Idaho i was at a high elevation in the high desert.
in Oregon I'm low elevation in a forest near the ocean.
thick air is always > then thin air.

Also keep in mind just because a car isn't pinging with higher timing doesn't mean that a little less timing won't make more power. The most amount of timing is not always the best.

I have no idea, thats what I was trying to figure out. I agree totally that too much timing on any car can be counter productive. Just wanted to know if even a mild bump, say 12-13 degrees base instead of the 10, would give any performance gain, or if anything other than the factory settings would not improve, but possibly cost power due to the computer. Cool, thanks man. That tells me what I need to know. I will play around with it and see what it likes, but keep it 13 or under until I can get my head swap etc. done, and car on dyno to be safe and make sure what its doing. Appreciate it. Joe
