Yes, it can... Your phone carries a positive charge, if said charge comes in contact with the fuel, or the nozzle, it can burst into flame.

Studies have shown that just sliding out of your seat and conducting the slightest bit of static electricity can set your car on fire when you come in contact with the nozzle... Why you should leave all elecronics in the car, and should never get back in your car while your pumping gas...

I had heard the episode existed, but I hadn't seen it, so i couldn't remember the outcome...

I've read articles about static electricity and cell phones...With both being fire starters at some point...I think it was more older phones that used to do it, and not newer ones...

I actually had a phone that (After years of use) somehow managed to give out a decent shock, so I could see how that could start a fire...But, it was a pretty old phone that was really close to death...
