radiator fan on start up?

Hey y'all,

I was having cooling issues, I just replaced the hoses for the radiator and the thermostat. As I'm getting ready to get it fully back together, I have a question. With the heat on all the way on start up to burp the cooling system, should the fan turn on right away? Sorry if thats a dumb question lol I just wanna make sure the car is happy. Thanks!

For sure. Good to know. When I replaced my radiator core, the original bottom hose to the radiator was cut short to fit it's crashed position. So we had to stretch it a little to make it fit in the new position. Since then, I've had on going cooling issues. It would basically boil in the degas chamber, causing white smoke and coolant to go everywhere while I was driving, and then just while the car was at operating temp. I thought that air was getting into the system. The heat on the dash would stay in the middle though. Then I realized the fan wasn't turning on so I thought thermostat. I replaced the hoses and the thermostat now. Going to put new coolant in now and hope and pray I guess haha

I’m actually having a similar issue with my 09 Crown Vic. It’s the fan not keeping up. They use a variable speed fan so it doesn’t have a seperate low and high speed circuit. It doesn’t move enough air causing it to overheat. How old is the radiator cap? It can go bad and not hold pressure anymore causing coolant to boil over.

I’m actually having a similar issue with my 09 Crown Vic. It’s the fan not keeping up. They use a variable speed fan so it doesn’t have a seperate low and high speed circuit. It doesn’t move enough air causing it to overheat. How old is the radiator cap? It can go bad and not hold pressure anymore causing coolant to boil over.
probably as old as the car (99); someone else said that about the cap too. Going to get a one to hopefully help. Thank you very much for the advice :)!

Turning the heat on doesn't do anything for burping air out of the system, so forget about roasting yourself in summer time.

Thermostat has nothing to do with fan activation. The temp sensor detects hot water independently of thermostat operation. Thermostat only exists to allow cooled water from radiator to enter the engine block.

There is a strong possibility of trapped air within the system. If you saw the white smoke coming out of the tailpipes, your engine has a blown head gasket and may already be ruined and need of a rebuild. If the white smoke came from under the hood, there's a chance that boiling/overflowed coolant simply leaked onto something hot like an exhaust manifold.

Chasing any remaining air out of the coolant system should be the current focus. Taking the car to a shop with a professional OBD Sanner to run a test of the coolant fan should also be a high priority.

thank you so much for the effort here, I am so freaking thankful.
there was white smoke coming out of from under the hood, so no engine rebuild here omg I would actually had freaked out then.
I'll spend today getting a new cap and bleeding properly and my friend I drift with works at a family shop so I'll ask him about using his ODB.

I'm going to not, also doesn't turn on when a/c is turned on which is probably bad lol planning on figuring out how to check the motor (probably relays) and I have a voltometer. so my plan is check the relays, check to make sure its working and then idk, if its working it should be the ECT sensor right? Feeling pretty let down after all the waiting and work, only for now something else to be bleh. If y'all have any ideas, throw em at me

Don't drive it more than 5 minutes if the low speed fan won't come on. Get a scan tool on the port to try and force-activate the low speed fan. Otherwise, you would have to remove the CCRM and pop it open to test or at the very least backprobe the CCRM harness connector with engine running to test for fan activation along with a steady eye on the gauge cluster temp needle so you don't overheat the thing.
