many thanks for your help -- all the kits i saw excluded the 2001 cobra -- seemed to be a wiring issue -- anybody know of a solution or workaround ?

The turn signals on the 2001 Cobra are different. They are a separate amber section of the housing with only two segments, vs blinking the 3 red segments like the standard models have.

The kits out there are setup to blink 3 segments, so you need to find someone who can make a two segment sequencer.

they make a kit that doesn't have the harnesses on it and you would have to cut/connect them. Just take one wire at a time and it is not that hard. I got a kit a few years back for a project I never did and have it sitting here if you want to make an offer. It is supposed to be for a 96-04 mustang

ttocs -- sorry -- i just now saw your post -- apologizes for not responding sooner --

i found a sequential kit from CARiD.com -- https://www.carid.com/spec-d/product-mpn-lt-mst99rgled-sq-tm.html?singleid=1209040286

and it fits great -- the only problem is that the connectors don't marry up -- their tech support people are looking at the problem -- seems to me the simplest route is to cut off the male end of the connector from the old tail light -- figure out which 4 wires on the OEM to connect to the 4 wires on the sequential light -- cut off the sequential connector and connect the wires -- but we'll see --

there are lots of sequential tail light kits out there but all others specifically excluded the 2001 cobra model -- there apparently is something 'unique' about the wiring -- this was the only kit that swore it would fit a 2001 cobra --

according to the manufacturer of the tail lights -- they are incompatible -- apparently the 2001 cobra is the only mustang that you can't put sequential lights on -- i am too new to all of this to understand why -- if there is anyone out there who would be willing to educate me on why -- it would be greatly appreciated -- many thanks

That’s because, as others said, the 99/01 cobras have a seperate amber turn signal unlike the rest of the 99-04’s that have all red brake lights that also act as the turn signal. They are integrated. Since the 99/01 cobras don’t use the tail lights as the turn signals, they can’t use a sequential harness.

i have not given up -- the sequential lights fit my 2001 cobra and work about half way -- i replaced the old 6 pin connector with something newer on both sides -- the issue is still 5 wires from the car -- 4 wires to the sequential lights -- they respond correctly to the turn signal but if you apply the brakes -- all lights come on -- looking at schematics for a 2001 mustang, page 90-1 turn/stop/hazard lamps -- follow the brake light dark green wire to S323 where it splits -- for the cobra DG goes directly to the rear lights -- for a standard mustang (except cobra on the schematic) -- the DG goes to pin 511 of the multifunction switch -- then to the rear lights -- so my plan is to find those 2 DG wires in the dash -- put bullet connectors in them -- take 1 out of the system -- run the other to the MFS and hope i can shove it in pin 511 --

any suggestions, comments, advice -- to include -- "you are nuts" -- sincerely appreciated --

DONE and they look awesome -- and everything works !! all the credit goes to kid capri who posted in StangNet, nov 2011 how to jumper 2 wires together to get the brakes to work with a sequential tail light unit --

where there's a will -- there's a way ......
