Shifters that are not notchy

My car came with a pro 5.0 shifter, and as you guys know these are kinda notchy and "click" into gear. At first I thought I loved it but as time went on I found I can't shift as fast with it as I used to with a stock shifter in my old car. Of course It doesn't help that my tranny has been getting notchier and notchier as the season went on. But I'm getting my tranny rebuilt with upgraded astro gears and I want to switch shifters as well. the slight resistance from the "click" of the pro 5.0 as it goes into gear just keeps me from slamming those gears at the track like i want to and I sound like I'm granny shifting :angry7:

So what short throws do you guys use that have stock style smoothness?

I loved my Pro 5.0 - I used to bang gears like no other with it..

You can try a Tri-Ax or a MGW..I have no experience with them though..

I don't think I've ever heard anyone complain about the MGW. I however have not had one, I'm just sharing info I've heard. Anything should be better than stock though. My stocker doesn't even pull to the middle in neutral anymore. Well, actually it pulls to the middle after pulling it out of 5th or reverse, but not when pulling out of 1st and second. Quite annoying...

MGW is for the most part the only one around that doesnt have a notchy feel from what i've been told. I love my triax though, good shit. Very short, precise, a little notchy, but gets the job done.

"Notchiness" has a lot more to do with the transmission than the shifter.

i'll agree to that. My 95's is very notchy compared to my other cars. No idea why but same shifter, just alot more notchy.

I had a Pro5.0 on my car when i bought it on the stock t-5. It was very clanky, almost robotic like shifts. Then i got my TKo setup
that came with the Steeda Tri-ax, and it is WAY smoother, and doesn't have the "metal on metal" feel to it so to speak. Have not driven
a MGW shifter equiped car yet, would like to, to get a comparison.

I have the mgw. It does not have the notchy feel. My buddy has a tri ax and I like it much more than that. Healso says he likes my mgw more than his

I had a pro 5.0 when I bought my car, and I replaced it with an MGW because I thought it was a stock shifter!

I have had the MGW in for about 3 years now, and I have not had any problems with it yet. Feels solid and smooth....

WOW wide range of difference here!!!

I have had all 3!!! one after another. I started with Tri-AX, Then Pro 5.0 Then MGW. I have MGW now.

As far as my opinion the pro 5.0 gets my vote, 2nd comes MGW, then TRI-AX, Pro 5.0 has shortest throw, then MGW, The TRI-AX is great shifter for street car.

If you are looking for shortest throw and like to slam gears get pro 5.0

If you want less notchy feel get tri-ax. MGW is somewhere in the middle.

I have heard B&M Ripper is good too for the street. But i have never tried it :)

I finally put a Pro 5.0 in my car last year (after having the car for 13 years!). The weird thing is that with the stock shifter I would miss third sometimes. With the Pro 5.0, sometimes I miss second, which is very embarrassing. I'm not pulling it all the way back.

Notchy feel can also have a lot to do with the condition of the clutch. If you look at the shifters when they are off the transmission, and you move them around freely, the are all smooth without any interference. I use MGW now. On my old car, it was notchy as hell (synchros were shit and clutch was worn). My new car came with a triax; Felt nice but had a longer throw than the mgw. I swapped in my MGW and its was not nearly as notchy as it was in my old car. I adjusted the clutch with my fiore FWA and quadrant and now its smooth as hell.

CONCLUSION:

Shifters aren't necessarily the cause of notchyness; they can just make it feel different- The source of it is in the trans and clutch
