years ago when I upgraded my CAI I just did a cheapo ebay kit, fer I can't remember how much maybe $30-40. I figured I would use it till I needed to clean it and had some extra cash and would see if there was a big difference between the one I had and a better one. I am waiting for my custom length plug wires to go on my wire loom and for the russel adaptors to upgrade my fuel lines to stainless braided and realized this was the time I could look closer at the filter. I took the old one into autozone to comair it, ans was suprised when I saw the universal spectre filter that was actually in the chrome/bling isle rather then in the filter section. It looked to be the same lenght, but was a little wider and had the top portion cut out to allow more air as well. Looking at the two it was hard not to believe the larger spectre with the top would be less restrictive, and it was only $30 so I decided to try it. It will fit my piping, but I will need to open up the hole in the fender just a hair. It woud be covered by the polished piece infront of it and you would not see any difference so I don't really see a problem with loosing half an inch of metal in the fender wher it will not be seen to gain more air capability. Does this make sence to you guys and does anyone have any expereince with this brand good/bad?

Here is what it looks like

thats what I figured, cool. How much did you take off of the fender and how hard is it to get in/out now? It was noticably bigger then the other. My old filter use to make a horrible sucking noise when the passenger door is open I a curious to see how much that is reduced now and that would have to = less restrictions.

I used a larger K&N filter on my cheap CAI, the only way to install it was to put the pipes in place first then put the filter on from the bottom

Needed to tighten the clamp holding it on with a 1/4 ratchet since that is the only thing I could fit in there but it wasn't too hard to do

A filter is a filter is a filter....as long as it isn't a stock paper filter, your car won't draw in enough air to max out that filter. I personally don't like any oiled filter element due to the fact that the car can and will draw in the oil and it's some sticky shit! AEM make conical dry reusable filters that work and flow awesome. We ran it on a couple of 1000rwhp supras and I run one on my dodge. 60000 miles on my truck and when clean it, the filter indicator doesn't show any indication of a clogged filter and the intake duct is spotless

the spectre is oil free. Do you or anyone else hear the sucking noise from the filter in the passenger quarter?

Ive always heard the sucking noise from my open filters in my cars.

Spectre isn't a bad brand. They're at the Goodguy shows I attend and usually beating on some cars.

I hope to have everything back together today or tomorrow and will see if the sound is reduced. Mine was so loud that when someone would get in the car, I would hear it in the drivers seat when they opened the door. I can't help but think that if the old filter was creating a drag that it would be audible and by reducing it maybe....
