rio's right . take #1 plug out, put yout finger over the hole and turn the engine over by hand. (trans in neutral)when you feel the air pushing out past your finger your on the compression stroke. get a flast light and shine it down the spark plug hole and when the piston stops rising then it's at TDC. put the plug and wire back on, stab the dizzy, set the rotor on #1. and fire that mother up. time it with a light. in the future it helps to set it at TDC before you pull the dizzy by removing the cap and rotating the motor until the rotor is pointing at #1 and your set.

I just replaced the stator on my car without marking anything. I took off #1s spark plug, unplugged the coil wire to the distributor. Placed my thumb on the hole, had an assistant turn the key until I felt the compression. Then I turned the crankshaft until the timing bracket marked with TIME was aligned at 0 on the balancer. From then grab a timing light, take the spout out and get to adjusting. Let me know if you need more details.

That's a kickass picture. I might add that to the stator How-to article.

yeah it would answer alot of questions. You should add another how to on correctly finding TDC for piston #1 for those who accidentally dont mark anything or anyting similar. =) I know I needed it but I troubleshooted everything myself and learned from my mistakes. =)

Yes. Remove the spout connector, set the "base" timing and then re-connect the spout connector.
Disconnect battery/re-calibrate ECM afterwards.
