temp sending unit question

Im buying an auto meter elec temp gauge and im wondering where the temp sending unit is? if anyone can post a pic or set me in the right direction that would be great

I just put one in mine. I took out the sender on the passenger side which runs the gauge, and put a 3/8 tee in for now. I plan on having the crossover tapped for the sender when I have it off to do the PI swap. I got the tee from a hydraulic hose parts house. I think I spent about $3 for the tee and piece of pipe to raise it up. It will be more accurate if you will leave one of the senders loose then start the car to allow the coolant to rise up into the tee then tighten it down. That will be as close as you can get it unless you can get it in the block (back near the motor mount on the driver?s side) If you do put it in the block you may need an adaptor depends on the year of the motor.

i drilled and tapped the thermostat housing on mine, worked out great

is what your talking about on the intake manifold at the front and recessed into it?

Here is a pic of the way I have it now. Wow I really need to clean my engine.

my plan is when I have the intake off over the winter to have it tapped in the center of the crossover for the sending unit.

you just have to have the one that controls the fans, which is the passenger side, the other one simply goes to the gauge

so let me get this straight i need both if i use the passenger side and only one if i use the driver

When I put mine in the first time I took out the one one the passenger side, and put the Autometer one. When I did this the stock gauge didn't work, but the fan worked fine. I could be wrong, but you can easily check it by unplugging the passenger side and see if the gauge won't work.

if you pull the connector for the fans, it will kick the fans on and keep them on constantly, so that is a easy way to tell which one does the fans and which one does the temp.

its been a while since i've messed with them.

That is why I put the Tee in so that both would work. It will not be as accurate with the tee but it will be real close. You can go to an Ace hardware store or to some one that makes A/C or Hdy hoses, and they can fix you up with what you need. You will need a Brass T 3/8 and a short extension I bought the one that had a hex on it so I could tighten it down on it's own. You can also get steel pipe at lowes, but I like brass better. I also didn't put the senders in until I had it put in. The reason I did that is because I didn't have much slack in the factory wire and I could put that sender in where I needed to. I also left factory sender loose untill it filled with coolant then put the rest of the way in.
