Sometimes Overheating engines intrigue me and I just cant figure out what it is.

I have a 1995 auto GT which I plan on doing a bunch of mods on..However I want to fix a few issues it has first.

First issue is that it runs hot on the highway. Driving around town idling..No issues. Stuck in traffic in 100 degree weather...fine

Do 80 on the highway and eventually it will creep on the high side of the factory Temp gauge. An dit is running hot as I will overflow my tank when I plul over and shut down when running that hot NOWWWWWWWWWWWW

That generally seems to be a radiator issue. Well Rad and fan were new when I bought the car..However I put a nice big aluminum rad and a 180 thermostat anyways.

Same issue. No oil in water water in oil.. Also cleaned condensor to make sure it wasnt clogged or blocking airflow . And the fan seems to work..But shouldnt be an issue at 80mph anyway

Another issue is detonation...And yes I read plenty on that. Timing set at 10 degrees..May be an EGR issue..May be corelated to this issue. Havnet gotten aroudn to that as I dont beat on the car and its fine if I dont do that

Fuel pressure seems fine but pump will be changed soon when I do mods.

ANy ideas...Something I missed???

air deflector still under the radiator support?
You know funny that you mention that because my 94 is missing it and it has to be one of the coldest running mustangs i have ever seen lol, stuck in traffic or doing 70mph that gauge does not go past the 1/4 mark and i know it works cuz i had the fan fail and that thing went all the way to red to the point the upper hose burst, lucky me i didnt blow a gasket.

Air deflector has to be there. Just under the radiator support, if it's not there, it will be fine idling, traffic, and cruising. But when you go fast, it will heat up. Specialy if your running the motor hard.

The deflector pushes air up before the radiator, these cars are bottom feeders. The air through the grille and front bumper is just a bonus.

Car is bone stock has good compression and no real blowby. Also has the factory air defelctor. I had added the mach 1 chin spoiler and it made no difference. Also added the 180 tstat and a new big three core aluminum radiator....No Difference

Mmm ive had the same issue for years, just got the engine rebuild and still have the heating issues, waterpump is practically new and have a custom made radiator, still have the heating and it gets even hotter once i start pulling it harder. But i dont have that air deflector everyone says. i have a new autometer mechanical water pump and going to hook that up to get a good reading cause the stock gauge is more of a dummy gauge.

Running hot on the highway makes me think the a/f might be too lean....my car usually ran so cool because if how rich it was on the highway.

On my car turning electric fans on sooner made a world of difference as well.

But you have a 95 so thats a bit different.

I was thinking about potentially running lean. It does detonate easily once warmed up and although Im getting good pressure readings for the fuel pump it is old and humming a bit..Maybe Ill just change that and see what happens...Doing it anyway with my mods to come

I would say to get It on a dyno with a/f reading before you replace anything....

Are you running 93 Octane?

Yes running 93 octane. Balancer is brand new and timing set to 10. Im going to be putting in the Moates QH and my innovate AFR gauge the minute I get the chip back...Im doing a 255lph anyway so changing it now wont hurt. Ive been working with Foxes since 1989 and the quirks of this 1994-1995 EEC and whatnot is killing me. Allot has to do with the timing curve and AFR for emissions reasons Im sure. Seems once these particular cars get allot of miles on themBAM..I have 183,000 now and teh car runs great BUT....Has these issues I want to solve before doing my cam/head/intake....swap..But the pump change cant hurt now..

i have a cooling issue as well, mine runs hot unless the a/c compressor is running then it stays very cool, i have a mach 1 chin spoiler i wonder if having that on there is blocking air?? Otherwise I think it may be a cooling fan issue does anyone know if the cooling fan just stays on all the time with the compressor running?? (Sorry to hijack)

is there a switch in there that goes bad?? or should i just wire it to a toggle switch and put it on the dash?? i don't daily drive the car but when i do drive it, i usually put 100 miles on it at a time
