The story is a bit long so please bear with me. About two weeks ago my x-pipe broke, it cracked from side to side in the middle of the X. While I was waiting for My new one to arrive my car started making this clunking noise. I thought that maybe it was the pipe opening and closing as the motor and car moved. Well I replaced my old mid pipe with a new bassani catted X and my old flowmaster Junkers for a Borla Side exhaust. It took me a whole day to get it just right where nothing rubbed or it was too close to the ground. But.... I went for a test drive and the noise is still there. I can only hear it when I accelerate in first and second gear, as I speed up it goes away. I went as far as to lift the car up from the rear and put it in gear while turned on and couldn't hear anything, meaning it only does it while on the ground and moving, I can't hear it if the car is at a dead stop and I rev the engine. I spent several hours looking for something that had gotten loose but couldn't find anything. It sounds like I dropped a socket down my exhaust (which I didn't) and the socket is jumping around violently. It also sounds like I'm dragging a piece of metal on the ground and it's jumping around. Has anyone gone through this or heard of anything like this before? I'm all out of patience and ideas, please help.

i would check your u-joints. jack the car up with it in gear and try to turn the driveshaft and see if it has any up and down play to it. i had a clunking noise kind of like that and it was my u joints.

when does it start to make the noise? does the noise speed up in relation to your car?

It actually goes away as I speed up. I took off my Dust shields to take a look inside and couldn't find anything loose and I know I didn't leave them flapping around when I put them back on. It sounds as if I have a bad Hub bearing but I checked those as well and regreased them. This morning as I drove to work the noise wasn't there anymore until I turned two blocks away from the parking lot
