Torque Wrench Question

Do you guys use the same torque wrench for wheels and engine components?

I currently use mine for both BUT i was wondering if i should go get a cheaper one just for wheels instead of using my nice snap-on one.

What do you Guys think?

I do exactly that, I bought a cheap one at harbor frieght for the wheels and have a good one for everything else

This makes no sense why is a torque spec more important on your engine then on your lug nuts??? The tool is ment to be used, USE IT. If you want 100lb/tq for lug nuts why not know its 100 not 95 or 89 or 109 with a cheaper torque wrench. Im by no means saying abuse the tool but its a TOOL, there are guys in our shop who use their torque wrench more times in a week then you will in a year. If you think your snap on may get out of calibration or whatever, give it to your local rep and he can send it out to get recertified.

well, in december i am going to a few Auto-X events on my Vacation.... I usually take my good torque wrench for my wheels but kinda wanna buy a cheapo just to hull in the trunk.

I wouldn't bother with a cheapo one. You bought the snap-on one to have a nice reliable tool that works, if for some reason it breaks just send it off for a new one.

keep it in the plastic case, keep it secure and dont abuse it and you will be fine

I dont abuse the tool. Its always in its case and i treat it like a baby.... just dont want it getting hurt.

If your worried about the wrench getting stolen while your out driving then get the cheapo. other wise use the good one.

if you have a $300.00 snap on digital one, i would just use it for engine stuff, to keep wear-and-tear low.

id hate to drop it and crack the screen or something... yea know? but thats EXACTLY why i dont have a $300.00 TQ wrench. lol. im with duffy, buy a $100.00 TQ wrench and use it till it falls apart. thats what its for.

YOu totally didnt understand what I put then, I told him to just use the snap on like its ment to be used and move on. I have easy over 1k in tools I bring to the track between the jack, sockets, impact, wrenches ect. Just take your good stuff, you dont want to have to worry bout the junk one being miscalibrated

Fathers often have this dilemma with kids. They love their first one so much that they kind of want a second one that will take all the wear and tear while they train the oldest to be the next Tom Brady or Chuck Norris.

well, a 100$ TQ wrench is still pretty high quality... compared to a 25$ harbor freight one. But if i had a $300.00 snap on digital one, id just use it for motor work. keep it as cherry as possible.

if i recall correctly, Snap On has a lifetime warranty on all tools. if it breaks they replace it, no questions asked.

so if he breaks his $300 torque wrench, guess what? Snap On gives him a new one

Its quite easy dont buy an electrical one get the same torque wrenchs that have wored for the past 100 years

eh... back in the day they used "good judgement" to know when a bolt was tight enough... thats what ill do now... saves me $100

click types aren't recommended for engine assembly as it is, for this a beam or dial style torque wrench is better suited as they are generally more precise
