Need some feedback on this transmission because I want to buy it new and swap it in for my AODE. One thing thats on my mind is people talking about 3rd gear being hard to shift around 6100-6500rpm, and what do I need to make it work. I was seriously going to go with T56 magnum but the kit is just way to expensive these days, and I am really starting to justify why do I need the extra overdrive gear. Your thoughts?!?!?

Its been auto for 7yrs, time to step it up and row gears lol. I thought it was a PITA to get cobra T56 and swap it in. And doesn't the tail shaft doesn't have mechanical speedo to it? Its only electronic right?

edit: I also have the Dallas speedcal because of my FR 3.73's.

Lakewood or ford bellhousing, 5/8 drive spacer, 31 splined tailshaft yoke. Make sure you get proper tail shaft angle and index bellhousing(angle finder and dial indicator is key).. Have patience. D&d has a kit.

I did that swap myself.
The TKO was great. Didn't like the free of my spec clutch. Swapped it out for a McCloed twin.
Read good things about the T56 as well.
Depending on your power level you may not really need the 6th gear, or a built T56 for that matter.

I ended up going back to a built auto, because I like driving the auto, and because I have a turbo and like keeping it loaded through the gears.

The have TKO kit? Thank you for the great information, very straight forward. What are your thoughts on the 03/04 Cobra T56, more of a PITA to put it in?

I'm eventually going to build the engine, and last thing I want to do is have trans that is not capable of handling the power. :(

D&D has T-56 Magnum kit for $3800. Includes bellhousing, driveshaft, shifter, pigtails for reverse inhibitor and lights, brackets, and mounts. Would still need a 26 tooth clutch kit. http://www.ddperformance.com/shop/product_info.php?products_id=219cPath=108_143

T
he TKO 600 is $2300 but, includes nothing else. http://www.ddperformance.com/shop/product_info.php?products_id=45cPath=107_91

T-56 Magnum is also available in non kit form for $2900.

I suggest you call and talk to whoever Don has working for him if he is not around. Been years since I went over to their shop but, very helpful. If you can get number to Don Jr. he has experience doing the installs at his shop. Very helpful also. Even if you want to piece your own from a used trans. out of another car whether it was cobra, viper, aston, gto, or f body they can tell you what you need to work it for you. The Magnum that they now sell is an upgraded unit over the previously used T-56.

Nate, Mustang Dave is selling his TR3650, clutch, pedals, flywheel, etc for really cheap! It only has like 40k miles on the tranny. For what your looking for, it will be more than enough to handle the power even if you build the car up. I have one in my Bullitt and I love it! Shifts smoothly, has internal shift stops, and has taken quite a bit of abuse! I'd definitely hit him up on FB, or PM me and I'll give you his number? Plus he's local!!

D&D has kits for both. last time i saw this year they did.

Hmmm. Gonna have to check their website again. I also like how promotion has link that shows you the Aode to 5/6speed comparison. I just have to be wise and see whats the best bang for the buck, and weigh the transmissions in power, efficiency, and budget.

The magnum is the pinnacle, but wow close to 4 grand for the kit!! Thats like buying supercharger kit :( Or close to it.

When Alex was polishing his car before he made it to Cali. Dave told me about the transmission. I'm definitely not counting it out because if I dont have enough funds when I get my tax money back, I might be calling him. I have a lot of pieces at my house Mike. ECU, harness, pedals, new flywheel, clutch quadrant/cable, flywheel bolts. I just need some miscellaneous pieces, and the actual transmission itself. My goal is to get this swap done before AM. And have the exterior of the car looking the way I want. Its been close to stock for way to long. Thoughts?

Honestly if I was you I would be ALL over that trans. It's more than enough for what you wanna do, and it would be silly to pass it up. I'm sure Dave would cut you a screamin deal on it, even if you just needed the transmission. That's my thoughts...

As for exterior mods, I'd say it's lookin great and will look even better with that hood painted and a chin spoiler on there. As for wheels, I have a HUGE vote for either 18" chrome 03's, or 18" black 03's with a red pinstripe...here's a chop I did on Jon's old car...

Not a great chop, but you get the idea...i think it looks menacing.

Great minds think a like! I've been feening over chrome 03's in 18's on this paint code for a long time. I've seen chrome cobra R's on this paint code a long time ago in person, and professional pictures and it looks fantastic. I'm going to try my hardest to pick up the wheels from AFS when I come across some funds.

Now for the trans, I always wanted something new but I'll never count used out. I feel like if the unit is new, there is less problems to deal with but that is just me. My heart was really set on T56 Mag, but wayyy to expensive. Now its on the TKO600, or what dave got.

My dad has a TKO600 in his Chevelle, and don't get me wrong, it's a great transmission. But for the money dude, you aren't gonna beat the deal you'll get on the TR3650. Plus if god forbid you have any problems with it in the future, they are cheap and easy to rebuild. Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe you also need to run a scattershield with the TKO, I don't think it bolts to OEM Ford bellhousings.

I run a Tremec 500. I've had it for 3.5 years without a hitch. I don't plan on ever having more than 400 HP cause I do alot of autoxing and I plan on staying N/A..

Hmmm really?!? Got to look into that deeper into that. Is it because its in your Dad's chevelle? I think they might bolt up to a Ford bell housing, but im guessing now. It's going to be few months before I decide what I'm officially going to go with. I'm mostly going to call promotion and get a second opinion. I also like there built T56, reasonably price as well.

Does it shift like butter like the TR3650? I heard that it takes a while for it to break in because it has 3 shift rails in the transmission.

i had a tko 600 in my 93 cobra. bought new from d&d (great customer service). i used the stock shifter at first, had a spec 3 clutch behind a turbo 302. made just over 400hp and was a great trans. the stock shifter is pretty notchy and stiff at first. it did loosen up, but i switched to a pro 5.0 shifter and that was great. i also had a standard aluminum bell that i got from d&d, you don't have to run a sfi bell.

i never had the 3rd gear shift issues, but i never really had those issues with t-5's or anything. if you don't line up your shift pattern, then sure, you could mis shift anything.

Thanks for you input! It's going to help make a final decision when it gets warm. They say that the transmission needs to be indexed and lined up so you do not get those 3rd gear issues. I'm glad that people had success with it. How much did the kit run from ddperformance? I didn't really see a kit on their website, you probrably have to call and find out.

Is it really worth getting the 6 speed?!? I guess its all about perference. If I go with built 6 speed, it will probably be from promotion.
