I know there is a how-to on this, but I just want to make sure I dont mess my wheels up. Before I start painting them I would like to get as much advice as possible. I would like to them in a gunmetal finish. Anyways, my ears are open.

No way, I am not painting those. I am sorry I did not specify. I still have my stock wheels and wanted to paint them so I could use them for winter wheels.

Well, if they are aluminum just clean then up everywhere you can, use de-greaser, brake cleaner, and for the tough spots use steel wool, or a very fine sand paper, ( 2000 grit) , Once all the brake dust, ect is off, scuff up all the surfaces with a high grit sandpaper, then wash and dry them to get the dust off. Try and find some VHT brand polyurathane wheel paint, its the best i found for chipping, ...ect. When the wheels are preped, spray a light first coat on, to get proper adheasion. Then i usualy put about 3-4 coats of the gun metal paint on.. (and wait until each coat is dry) then as soon as everything is dry to the touch, put another couple of coats of clear coat on ( also made bt VHT ) . Let them dry for about 24 hrs. before you put them on.

Hope this helps.

Yeah it does. Is there any "dont do this" type of things that I should be aware about so I dont screw my wheels up.

Ya, if you want you can mask the tires off, and the valve stem.. i didnt bother with the tires, because i used black... and the paint came off in the car wash.... lol .... but with gunmeatal i would mask the tires off. just be patient with letting them dry inbetween coats, and wait a long time before you put them on. Use a steady " sweeping" motion about a foot long, and try to get all around the spokes. dont worry about detail too much on the inside of the rim. What rims are they?

I painted my split spoke stockers that came on my car. All we did was use some 80 grit and scuff them up a good bit, then we went to a 600 grit then a 800 grit. Then we used some nice wheel paint we got from autozone (20% employee discount haha). They turned out amazing.

you jumped from 80 grit to 600? nothing inbetween? you must have done a LOT of sanding. i saw the pics of the wheels, they looked good

You need to sand off anyfinish on the wheels (Chrome, Paint, Whatever) before you paint...make sure you sand them smooth because it will make a big difference on the outcome

yeah we actually didn't do a ton of sanding with the higher grits, we just used the 80 to take off everything on the wheels then smoothed them out with the 600 and 800. They did turn out very well though.

its to roughen up the surface and to blend any chips or anything already in the wheel. sand more around the chips, starting with 80, 180, 300 then 600 to blend the chips or any imperfections so you wont be able to see them when you repaintthe wheels.

the spare looks good from what i can see
