what are these?

Probably a noob question, but what exactly are these two things? I never seem to notice them when I see pics of other people's engine bays... And they keep getting in my way.

This is a twisty mess of what looks like AC hose... but I don't really know what it goes to over here, or what the little electrical plug is.

I tried to get a decent pic of this, but it's tucked away pretty well. It's a little electrical box with a huge plug that's sandwiched into the mounting bracket for the coolant overflow reservoir. There's also a bunch of electrical connections that are pretty much all tangled up right around that area between the overflow and the AC stuff from the previous pic.
