I had a red top in my 98 GT till one day I went to start it and I seen smoke coming from the engine bay. The battery shorted out my engine harness and alternator. After that experience, I went with a motorcraft battery and was fine ever since.

Optima sucks plain and simple. Lots and lots of people have bad luck with them. If your car sits for an extended period of time the optimas don't like to take charge.

Wound up going with a Red Top, the $25 rebate and the fact i have a billet battery holder for optimas kept me in the family. I feel dirty.

Had a red top for four years in two different vehicles until I parked the white car for about 11 months without disconnecting it. Eventually it discharged to a point of no return. So now I have whatever I robbed from my foxbody, think its a Never-start or a Does-not-last :dontknow:

Thats where my problems started, when i was using it as a DD my stock lasted 5 years then my first red top lasted 4 years with lots of car off stereo pumping action. Then the car became a once in a while driver and started eating red tops and a yellow. I've gone through 3 Optimas in 4 years. This new one will last because if i don't drive it i will unhook it or add a battery tender.

Any battery will do that. That's what batteries do when they sit. If they sit too long, they start to sulfate.

Yes that is true but that doesnt change the fact that optimas suck. I've had plenty people tell me that they've gone through one after another. Plus most people that shell out the extra dough for one don't even need it in the first place.

It seems to me that the older ones were made better.
Anybody know if they changed ownership in the last 3-4 years?
