What the hell happened here?

Well i did a one wheel peel the other night so i figured the trac loc is getting worn out. I figured ill change the fluid and add friction modifier and see if that solves it for now. so i get everything and then i pull off the differential cover and i thought it might be a little low (not positive). anway i am cleaning up the cover and notice grooves on the inside of the cover. I have no idea what in the hell would cause it. It almost seems like the ring gear was hitting it but im not sure. I have never heard a noise in the rear end since i got it last may. Also i didnt find any shavings in the housing really (a few tiny ones). They are ford racing gears too (also are 3.73's, i figured they were 4.10's). What in the hell would cause this??? I think it was a problem that was fixed and they just put the cover back on but i dont know for sure. Ill go take pics and post them up and see what you guys think. i will pry go talk to the mechanic tomorrow and see what he says. If it still does a utofcloset: one wheel peel then ill have him rebuild the t loc and check everything out. Anyone ever see this before?

if something was worn of really bad i think there would be shavings for sure.

my guess is the previous owner did something retarded at some point.....you would hav herd noise if it was rubbing im sure!

Dude that is very interesting. Are the main caps loose? I wonder if the pinion is pushing the ring gear assly towards the rear, rubbing on the cover. It could happen under load... Is the cover the right one?

probably the original gears got busted, and a prior owner put new gears in.

ya it definately was a problem that was fixed (i hope so anyways lol). I would have seen a decent amount of shavings in there if it hadnt been.The caps were tight. Everything felt and looked fine inside so im not worried. Just never seen something like that before

well, 4.10's are pretty tall gears.. but you defintely would have heard something if they were scratching the housing.. and also, you would have seen a lot of metal shavings.. plus 4.10's are supposed to fit, so my guess is as everyone else has said.. previous owner busted his gears up or something, and now its fixed.

I had an 02GT that came into Haldeman once that took out the driver side bearing and had marks on the cover similar to that. But I can guarantee that's not your problem - the damn thing sounded like a spool without fluid in it, the car would barely move, walked the main cap, screwed up the ring and pinion pretty bad, took out the spider gears with little chunks of aluminum, etc. Guy had to be driving on that for awhile.

Thankfully, third member problems are typically EXTREMELY noisy.

I've never taken my car apart at all, the rearend is still as tight as the factory put it on and the only things I've changed were the antifreeze once and the oil every 3k miles and the airfilter.

well i got out of town over the weekend and when i got back i figured id better give er a 2nd burnout to see if the trac loc is working.... another one wheel peel utofcloset:. so looks like trac loc will be getting rebuilt. probably going to get the new carbon disks.

Also now i am not so sure that it isnt rubbing the cover. Every once in awhile when i back up i hear a pop sound kind of (heard it when i was getting ready to come back sun night). i dunno what the hell it is and it doesnt happen often but i almost think that it is hitting the cover. im gonna have it looked at when i get the trac loc rebuilt and im also gonna get a new cover (maybe a girdle). The gears looked fine and so hopefully there is no major damage. we shall see

yep, i had a 88 lx 4 banger that i dropped the clutch on it in high rpm and blew the rear and thats what it looked like.... Must be fixed now. My 98 makes popping noises when i put it in gear ... kinda like a clunk clunk.
