so , today i went to pick up my son from school car started fine . then when i get home , shut it off go in the house for a while. when i come back out to put it in the garage. i put the key in turn to on pos. theft light is blinking like crazy , and the car will start but shut off after like 5 seconds. i got it in the garage just by starting and letting the clutch out to get it moving. i remembered a car i had once before did that , so i tried the trick that used to work on that one .
i opened all doors including hood and trunk , closed them turned the alarm on with the key fob. when i unlocked it the car starts and runs now , WTF ?
i guess its a good thing it happened at home tho.....

anyone have any ideas , on what could be going on there ?????

Is your key pretty beat up? Do you have a spare? You need a minimum of 2 keys to program PATS, so you should have a spare.

Next time it happens, try the other key, if you have one. The microchip inside the key may have been damaged and it's not communicating with the other two PATS areas (the instrument cluster and the computer) and thus causing the car to cut out.

You must have drove it like you stole it until it thought it was stolen lol. J/k I agree that it was a fault in the antitheft system. Pulling the ground cable on the battery may have fixed it also.

When you have some extra money, I'd go to the Ford dealer and have them program another key for you. It's a bit expensive because the keys with the microchip inside cost a pretty penny, but you really should have a spare anyway.

yea , true . i should have done it before i lost my job, cause we had access to a ford IDS scan tool witch u can program keys with :(

How worn out is your Key or ignition system? Is it loose when you turn the key? or Tight?...Can you turn the ignition without your Key? If you can it was no more then a Mere .. started without a Key and with the Theft system we have..You can start it without a Key and it would just shut of after a few seconds...Maybe just a worn out Key Hole...

hmmm, feels pretty tight , and no u can't move without the key.

That is unless he finds the other key... Then he can program a third key himself. The keys are relatively inexpensive, at anywhere from 15
To 25 bucks or so......programming them can cost anywhere from 40 to 100 bucks.

You can buy a blank key from the dealer and have them program it.

If there is, I'm not aware of it. I'm pretty sure that to program the pats codes, you need a minimum of 2 keys and it has to be done at the dealership. The third key you can do yourself, but you'd still need it cut.

I guess my post didn't make sense? If you have only one key (ie you lost one) then you need the dealer to program a 2nd key. If you have 2 keys that are programmed then you your self can program a third. This process requires two programmed keys as both need to be inserted into the ignition before the one you want to program.

Lol.....it can be done, but you need two programmed keys to do it.....also if you find the 2nd key after you have a new one programmed, the pats system won't recognize the found key, even if it was programmed to the car.........

Well at least that is my theory.....won't know till my 99 cobra cluster gets here so I can run an experiment.
