Carb'd Mustang? a buddy and I are in an arguement. I said the last year for carb'd Mustangs was '86. He said the last year was '85... I got 5 bucks riding on this... what is it? of course, this is also the same guy that bet me $50(and lost) that his '95 Cobra came factory with an IRS... :snow_laugh:

85 in da house!

Handz style b****es! now you know its legit!

**edit - i just read an article and it said that 86 started using EFI.. guess i was wrong too.
**editx2 - i also just read that the HO versions used carbs in 86.. so carbs were around in 86 as well as EFI.. i guess 87 is when EFI totally took over?

i always thought 87's were the first EFI engines?? i guess i dont know for sure now either.. after reading. idk if my information from these other sites were bogus or what..

The last year Ford put a carburetor on a car engine (You could still find them on later trucks which had less emissions laws) was 1985. During 1985 Ford did come out with CFI, or Central Fuel Injection (CFI) which was throttle body injection and this could also be found on some Mustangs. This might be the cause of the confusion.

How do I know this? I am one of the old farts here that was there. I was in an auto tech school in 1986, post high school. We were learning about the "new" fuel injection systems at the time. It was there that we learned that Ford's last carbed car engine was in 1985 so we better be able to get past carbs and be open to learning fuel injection.

I'm with Steve, and here's the deal. In 85, a five speed car, still got the Holley 4 barrel. An auto got the funky CFI, by now most CFI's have been removed for a 4v.

In 1986 all 5.0's were fuel injected, in the manor we know today, but they didn't have the truck head's of the 87-up car's.

Hello,

It's true for 1985, it's was the last year of the carb and the first of the roller engine, in 1985 the Mustang GT had 210 H.P..

The first injection 5.0 Mustang was introduced in 1984 for automatic, this combo was good for only 165 H.P., next year the GT automatic was also fuel injected and got 180 H.P.
