When do you need a cage?

honestly i say put a cage in the second your car twists a inch.. its not just for safety it prevents that chassis from twisting like a hurricane

yea overall the people that go with out them are not really saving anything in the long run. I know with the way karma treats me that if/when I get that fast it will be caged.

It's when u get caught going to fast . Go on test and tune nights, there r to many cars to check all of them .they give u ur slip and wave u on by

As said several times, NHRA rules state 11.49 or faster lol. My goal is to run 11.6/.7 with my car since I daily mine and drive friends around often, don't feel like having them smash their faces on the bar that goes behind the front seats .

It used to be faster , my closest track said any thing under 11.0's u needed a cage that was 8 yrs ago tho. First time I blew a 10.96 @ 122 they wer like back it down or get out .......

Cages on a street car are just plain stupid. Don't matter how fast or cool it is, without a helmet you'd be lucky to survive an accident in a caged car. Let alone kids or any passengers. I'd never cage anything street legal.

Well of course if you're going fast enough to need a cage, you need a helmet. That being said, many lives have been saved by jeeps with roll cages.

when i read stuff like this it makes me giggle a little bit, its fairly obvious that the point of this thread is lost. the op asked when he needed a cage at the track. some of you may or may not like them but to race AT THE TRACK for more than one pass you need one clear and simple if your going to run faster than 11.49. For the record if my car rolls over on the street I like my chances with a cage in the car than without.

At the same point you should have a cage before 11.49 for rigity

I would not put a roll bar/cage in a street driven car period. You guys are failing to realize that if by some chance you are hit and thrown around in the car just imagine what your unprotected head would look like if it made contact w/ any portion of the roll bar/cage. Roll bar padding only goes so far. Your at a track/belted in/wearing a helmet it's different. I'm also w/ rich on this.

For the track, it's another story. But everyone in this thread is talking about street cars. A road course car never 'needs' a cage technically. Unless you choose to wheel-to-wheel race. A drag car is 11.49 or faster. But at that point both are track only cars.

Many people do it, but I guarantee when you're going to Taco Bell with your buddies not wearing seat belts or helmets and you get hit at 20mph by a Toyota, rollbar wins.

Bullshit. I watched a dude with a 5point harness hit his helmet on the steering wheel in a collision. You will move when hit, and it can be to any direction.

first off as was pointed out earlier factory cars are hitting numbers near or faster than these and they are by no means "drag cars". second what is being talked about here is safety AT THE TRACK you can have your opinion of what youd like about the street, no one here is talking about rolling around the street in a cage the likes of what is in my Cobra with the funny car setup. Wearing your regular seatbelt is what is recomended on the street even if you have a harness on it. MonsterMach hits a good point as well in that tweaking your frame on a Mustang is NOT hard to do they tend to want to lift the driver side wheel more than the passenger, and a tweaked frame is useless.
