Wifes 94 5.0 wont start...

My wife has a 94 5.0. 100% stock. She went to leave work 2 days ago and it would not start. The next morning would not start. A couple hours later I replaced the fuel filter. The darn thing starts. I periodically started it through out the day no problems. This morning it wont start. I figure I will try it a little later, closer to noon when I got it to start yesterday. Just in case something needs to dry out or warm up.

Does anybody have any thing for me to check? I thought I should check the fuel pressure but from what I read the car needs to be running. Please help I am lost on this problem and am not really sure where to go from here.

I hear the fuel pump running when I turn the key to the on position and the starter is turning the engine.

have you tried to pull codes yet? A code could have been set without the cel being on.
How many miles are on the car? Have you ck'd for spark?

car doesnt have to be running to check fuel pressure but if you can hear the pump your probably ok.

x2 check for spark

If there is no spark the a likely source will be the hall effect (PIP) sensor in the distributor. Common failure and acts up for various lenghts of time before completely failing.

you can get a pip from the auto parts place for about 20 bucks and rebuild it your self, or a remaned dizzy for 120 and have a warranty.

Ok guys, here is what i have found through more testing.

I tried jumping the car. No luck.

Pulled codes. Got code 337 EGR high voltage.

Had weak spark at the ignition coil. Swaped hers out with mine. Same thing, weak spark. Swapped back and put a jumper on. Started right up. Checked spark, Spark is good.

Pulled codes again 337.

Keeps starting.

Thanks for the input. Any more would be appreciated. Does any body know if this EGR issue would cause a no start condition?

I seriously doubt the egr code has anything to do with it.

If I were you I think I would swap out distributors.

I thought the same thing. It sure is nice having 2 of the same car. I am waiting for hers to act up again so that I can tell if/when it is fixed or there is a difference.

the first 5-10 minutes after starting the emissions are in bypass mode(open loop). after the car is warm the emissions crap kicks in and the o2's and egr start controling fuel(closed loop)
the egr valve could be stuck, or the o2 isn't reading right giving you the egr code

I would say dead on mine had something similar. it was the PIP.

I was having EGR codes when my pip was bad. Replaced the dizzy. Got a bad one from NAPA. Bought a second from autozone, installed it, haven't had a problem since. No EGR codes!

pick or the tfi if you hear the fuel pump priming. the distributor not only controls spark but it also controls injector pulse. if you have a oscilloscope you can quickly tell

I am going to look at the PIP. I am pretty sure it is not the tfi, I used mine out of my 5.0. It is hard to know when it is fixed. It is hasn't done it all week then on Saturday. It would not start but had to go somewhere and could not work on it. By the the time I had time to work on it it was starting. I don't have an o-scope. I have a multi-meter.

check to see if the pip has a coating of metalic dust on it if it does use q tips after blowing it out with compressed air to clean any remain dust from around the magnet. "had the same poblem the car would die not crank run when it wanted to just drive you nuts." if you are getting egr code check it by putting a vacuum pump on it and pull it up and down several times and watch the stem to ensure it is moving you may notice a carbon ring on the stem this was the culprit with mine the carbon build up caused the eger to stick open with a small pen knife carfully scrape the crude off the stem I took mine off the car so I could get to it more easily. maybe this will help

my msd coil went out recently. It would act like a rev limiter at 3 grand and when I could see it glowing blue at night, I knew it was done. Something to think about.

Check for spark at the coil and each plug!

I have spark on all plugs and coil. I tore down the dizzy and cleaned everything with contact cleaner. It is hard to tell if anything is still wrong because it is so intermittent. It is really pissing me off because I don't know if it is fixed and if/when/what I have done to repair it.

Cleaning the dizzy components seemed to make a difference. It seemed to start quicker. What I mean by that is just barely clicking the key trying to turn the crank a little it would start on me. I pretty sure I/we are on the right track.
